  • Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria

    The assassin was Serbian. Austrians and Serbians were having problems. Austria, however, was in no mood to negotiate. The nation’s leaders, it seemed, had already settled on war. This is important because it was the event that was the "last straw" and really started the war.

  • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

    Significance: This was the first war that started everything.
  • Russia, France and Britain go to war against Germany and Austria-Hungary

    This was the Western Front war. This is important to know because it was a 2 front war, and this was one of the fronts.
  • The First Battle of Marne

    The Allies attacked the Germans northeast of Paris, in the valley of the Marne River. Importnace: The war stopped the German army towards Paris and thereby keeping France in the war.
  • Battle of Limanowa

    17 day battle near Limanowa: The Austrians defeated the Russians and drove them eastward.
    Importance:This caused the Austrian army to push Russia out of Austria Hungary.
  • Gallipoli Campaign

    The Allies military plan, it was the effort to take the Dardanelles strait.British, Australian, New Zealand, and French troops made repeated assaults on the Gallipoli Peninsula on the western side of the strait. Gallipoli was another stalemate. In December, the Allies gave up the campaign and began to evacuate.
    Importance: One of the battles during the war.
  • Battle of Verdun

    The Germans launched a massive attack against the French near Verdun. Each side lost more than 300,000 men Importance: A battle during the war that caused a lot of casualities.
  • Battle of Somme starts

    British forces attacked the Germans northwest of Verdun, in the valley of the Somme River. In the first day of battle alone, more than 20,000 British soldiers were killed.
    Importance: this was the start of the trench warfare.
  • Battle of Somme ends

    The Battle of the Somme ended in November, each side had suffered over half a million casualties. Importance: This was the end of the trench warfare.
  • Zimmermann Telegram

    Germany sent Mexico a telegram stating that Germany would help Mexico reclaim the land it had lost to the United States if Mexico would ally itself with Germany. The British decoded the message and sent it to the U.S. government. Importance: This involved the United States during the time of the World War.
  • The United States joins the war

    United States allies with Britain and joins the war. When the Zimmermann note was made public, Americans called for war against Germany. But even before the note, many Americans had sided with the Allies because of all the similarities in the two countries. Importance: The United States is now joining the war.
  • Russia drops out of the war

    This is important because Russia had to sign a treaty with Germany which ended the war between them. The treaty required Russia to to surrender its land to Germany. This land is now known as Finland, Poland, Ukraine, Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. This is also important because Russia dropped out of World War I.
  • Second Battle of the Marne

    The Allies defeat Germany in this battle. This is important because Germany lost. It is important because it was the last major attack on the Western Front.
  • World War I ended

    Kaiser Wilhelm II was forced to step down. The new representive of the German government met with Marshal Foch and they signed an armistice, which is an agreement to stop fighting. This is important because World War I is now over.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Germany and the Allies signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ending World War I. And Germany had to pay all the reparations. It is important because it was a peace settlement that offically ended World War I.
