    On June 28, 1914, Archduke and heir to the Austria- Hungary Empire, Franz Ferdinand is killed by Serbian Nationalist Gavrilo Princip. The murder took place in Sarajevo. This causes Austria- Hungary to go to war with Serbia. This as well is the start of WWI.

    Through August 26 to August 30th 1914, The Russians are defeated in the battle of Tannenberg on the Eastern front. Germany takes more than 92,000 prisoners.

    Germany starts using Bread rationing.
    Due to the lack of economic plans on January 1, 1915 each and every citizen is given a “bread card” for the daily amount of 225 grams of food. In 1914 Germany would depend on imports for ⅓ of their food, fodder, and fertiliser. In 1915 the women of Germany protested the new high price for butter and shortages in food. The German government declared that no fats are to be sold on Mondays and Thursdays, no meat of Tuesdays and Fridays and no flour on weekends.

    On May 7, 1915, Germany fires a torpedo at the Lusitania, a passenger ship. Out of 1,959 people, 1,198 people had perished in the Celtic Sea. Germany defended themselves by saying they had issued a warning of its plan to attack ships regardless of neutrality. The Germany U-Boat that fired the torpedo was said to be commanded KapitanLieutnant Walther Schwieger.

    On October 12, 1915, A nurse by the name Edith Cavell is executed. Edith Cavell worked with Red Cross. The nursing instructor was accused of being a spy and helping Allied soldiers escape Belgium. Even after her death she was charged with espionage.

    The French Army flying unit mostly composed of American volunteers is formed on April 1st, 1916. The 38 Americans that served in the flying unit were credited with 57 victories. The unit was commanded by Captain Georges Thenault. The units first mission was on May 13, 1916.

    On June 24, 1916, to draw German troops from Verdun, the Allies launch an attack, which starts a huge large-scale artillery barrage, lasting 5 days. Both sides suffering tons of casualties. Britain had lost about 420,000, France lost around 200,000 and Germany had lost about 465,000, but the numbers for Germany are not absolute. After the 5- day barrage the battle will have continued throughout the summer into November.

    On September 29, 1916, As news of the Armenian Massacres begin to spread and cause alarm in 1915. A year later the situation is addressed by the German Government, By Dr. Siegfried Heckscher.

    Because of the war, Germany no longer have a choice but to keep using the submarines. The submarines are the only weapons that give an advantage. On January 31, 1917 Kaiser Wilhelm II gives the order again for all U-boats to “Sink on Sight.” The same order that caused the Lusitania to sink.

    The Zimmermann telegram is revealed to the U.S.
    On March 1, 1917, the U.S is told about the Zimmerman Telegram. The telegram revealed Germany’s plot against the United States. The U.S was alerted before Germany could do anything due to the telegram being intercepted by Britain. In the telegram, Arthur Zimmerman promised to return Texas, New Mexico and Arizona as payment to Mexico for siding with them.

    April 1917- Kendall Fielder- Sent to the first U.S Army Reserve Officers Training Corps, Camp McPherson, Georgia.
    After graduating with a bachelors in science degree in textile engineering, Fielder felt the need to enlist for WWI. In April 1917, Fielder was sent to Camp McPherson, Georgia, to the first U.S Army Reserves Officers Training Corps. After training he’s commissioned to be a 2nd Lieutenant. Fielder is then assigned to the 56th Infantry Ragiment of Chickamauga Park, Georgia.

    On July 1918, Lieutenant Fielder was deployed to France, part of the American Expeditionary Force. Lieutenant was leader of a machinegun platoon. The platoon was equipped with 30 Cailber Browning Water Cooled Machineguns. The guns were then just being introduced to the army.

    The 7th Infantry Division fights in the St. Lorraine Campaign. During the fight Fielder is wounded by shrapnel in St. Maihel. On November 5th, 1918 Fielder was given a telegram from his wife, he had become a father. His daughter was born on August 1, 1918, when his unit landed in France.
