    Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. He was killed by a 19 year old Bosnian Serb. His name was Gavrilo Princip and he was part of the group Young Bosnia.

    Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia after the assassination of the Archduke. In response Russia mobilized troops to the Russia border. Russia was also Slavic. Germany had given Austria-Hungary pressure for quick action.

    A German foreign minister named Arthur Zimmermann made a telegram that was planned to go the German minister in Mexico, von Eckhardt. Instead Britain got a hold of it and deciphered the telegram. Germany was planning on having Mexico join the war and offered them U.S. territory. This was one of the causes of the U.S. joining the war.
