  • The Assassination

    The Assassination
    Duke Franz Ferdinand and his wife Sophie of the Austria-Hungary throne are murdered by a Serbian named Gavrilo Princip in Sarajevo. This was a complete shock to their people, and caused outrage. They had been shot while in a carriage ride.

  • Declaration

    Declaration
    Austria-Hungary, believing that it was the Serbia government that was involved, demand retribution. Their demands are ignored, and tension begins to grow. They become increasingly angry at Serbia until they hit a pinnacle.

  • It begins

    It begins
    Austria-Hungary declare war on Serbia. After not receiving any penance from Serbia, they throw themselves to arms. Russia rallies its troops and mobilizes.

  • Flames Rise

    Flames Rise
    Through the period of 4 days, Germany declares war on Russia, and after that, France. The declaration of war on France was a part of a plan called the 'Schlieffen Plan', plan of invasion and domination. Finally, Germany invades Belgium and thus Britain declares war on Germany.

  • Continual Violence

    Continual Violence
    Over the past year the wars escalated into submarine attacks against merchant ships and the Battle of Gallipoli. The sinking of an English Cruise Ship by German submarines caused outrage and pushed the US further into the war as 1,195 civilians die. Lastly, the war becomes more widespread as Bulgaria enters the war to fight Serbia in October of that year.

  • Bloodshed

    Bloodshed
    Over the year the fighting continues with the death count piling up. The Battle of Verdun and the Battle of Jutland take place during this time. On the 1st of July, the Battle of Somme begins.

  • Continuation

    Continuation
    Throughout 1917 the war many different acts continued. The British intercepted a message from the Germans trying to convince Mexico to join the war, after that US officially entered the war. The Russian Revolution began to take place in March and the Tsar is taken from power. From the encounter with the German message, America then officially joined the war. The Russian government is overthrown, and by December they leave the war in peace.

  • Last efforts

    Last efforts
    Germany launches one last attack. They launch the last ditch 'Spring Offensive'. They do this in hopes of defeating the Allies before reinforcement comes to help.

  • Closing

    Closing
    As of November, Germany agreed to an armistice and the fighting came to an end. This caused mass celebration, though nothing was official. It all ended on the 11th day of the 11th month.

  • The Treaty of Versailles

    The Treaty of Versailles
    The Treaty is signed by Germany. Many countries rejoiced as war is finally over. And at last WWI has come to an end.
