    The German invasion of France in may 1940 was a fast and powerful military campaign during ww2 it happened because hitler wanted to defeat France quickly and avoid a long war on two fronts. Germany quickly avoided the strong french defenses by going through the Ardennes forest and using blitzkrieg tactics to surprise and over power allied forces. France than surrendered in June 1940, leading to German occupation and the creation of the vichy government. This event shifted the power in Europe.
