    Development of the Alliances

    Started in May 1882 when Germany Austria-Hungary and Italy created a secret alliance. Germany and Austria-Hungary were already very close since they have been allied since 1879. It was good they created an alliance ahead of time because then they had time to prepare for war. The countries that were in the Triple Entente were France, Britain and Russia. While they weren’t truly allied until WWI they all joined the Entente August 31, 1907.

  • Technology in WWI

    Technology in WWI

    Some of the Technology that was added into WWI was machine guns, poison gases, tanks and more. Machine guns were added into the war 1914 and really changed how battles are. The machine gun was such a deadly gun it made it hard to push in cause of the 400-600 rounds being fired at you every minute. Because of this whoever was defending. Made it much harder for the attacking people to advance because they would just get killed if they tried to push forward.

    Assasination of Franz Ferdinand

    The assasination happened in 1914 on June 28 when Franz Ferdin went to Bosnian Capital of Sarajevo. He traveled there on a state visit, while he was there he was attacked by a 19 year old Serbian nationalist. Gavrilo Princip, shot him at point blank range and he died almost instantly. Austria-Hungary was furious and Germany declared war on Serbia. Russia was allied to Serbia and because Russia was helping Serbia. Germany Declared war on Russia.

    The Second Battle of Ypres

    The battle was located in Belgium and lasted one month. The Second battle of Ypres was one of the deadliest trench warfares and for the first time Germans used Poison Gas as a weapon. While the battle was going on John Mcrae who was a soldier made a poem called Flanders Fields which is now read every year on remembrance day. This battle was important to Canada because it was the first time Canada had defeated Germany’s power. It also showed that Canada can hold for themselves.

    Manitoba Women get to Vote

    Before women didn't have many rights. When the war started and the men had to go to war. The women had to take over the husbands job, Which meant they were making money and felt they deserved more rights. When the men came back from war, they just told the women to go back to being a housewife. The women were angry that they did so much for the war and didn’t get anything in return; So they demanded the right to vote, in 1916 Women in Manitoba got the right to vote.
  • The Battle of Vimy Ridge

    The Battle of Vimy Ridge

    The battle started on April 9, 1916 and ended April 17, 1916 which meant it lasted a little over a year. The battle was located in France in Vimy. The battle was the British and Canadians against the Germans. The battle took place at 5:30 am with around 20,000 Canadian soldiers marching forward. It was significant because winning the Vimy Ridge meant that the British could push forward into German territory.

    The battle was located in France near the Somme river. The battle of Somme is known as one of the deadliest battles known to man. Over 3 million people fought in the war and over 1 million people were injured or killed. France and British allied to defeat Germany’s forces. Winning this battle was very Important to both sides because of how much they put into the battle. If they lost they would’ve allowed Germany to go past the border to France. it ended November 28 1916.

    Czar Nicholas II was the Emperor at the time. The Bolsheviks who were trying to over throw the emperor. because of it Kaiser Wilhelm who was the Commander in chief of the armed forces. Eventually the Bolsheviks were able to overthrow the Emperor and started to negotiate to end the war. Because Russia left the war which let all the Germans fight on the western front. November, 1918 Germany soldiers were tired and were out of resources and people were forced to sign to end war.

    The reason they forced people into war was because they did not have enough volunteers and they needed more for the upcoming battles. Because of this it split Canada in half because of people feeling they have already done enough for the war and are now being forced to fight. They also started to produce Victory Bond which was something you can purchase before war and after some years you could redeem for interest.

    The Battle of Passchendaele

    located in Belgium. British, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Germany all fought in this battle. After British, Australian and New Zealand Soldiers all failed to attack.Canada joined on October 27, and was able to push forward a little,but with a lot of casualties. Even with endless fighting the allied force could not take the ridge from the Germans. This battle is a battle that is said to be senseless fighting and death because of the unsuccessful capture of the ridge. ended November 10 1917

    Income Tax Introduced

    The war revenue act was added on october 3,1917 when the U.S. greatly increased the income taxes of people living in the U.S. so they can support the people in war. They also had to create income tax for war because of how much resources and money they were putting into the war already.
  • The Khaki Elections

    The Khaki Elections

    This election was for who will be the next Prime Minister of Canada. Sir Robert Borden created a Union Government with Conservatives, Liberals and Independents. Sir Robert Borden gave the people that went to war a vote and their wife a vote to give him an almost guaranteed vote for him. He gave no votes to people who objected and immigrants which were all the people who didn't want to go to war. The name of the election came from the color of their uniform.

    It is when opposite sides agree to stop fighting. It was signed in France on November 11 at 5:00 am so the war ended at 11:00 am. That is why on November 11 at 11:00 am every year we time a minute of our time for silence.
