    Britain desperately needed an army, made a campaign to gather volunteers via propaganda and promises that villages could stay and fight together etc. More than 500,000 joined in the first month.

  • DORA

    Meaning Defence of the Realms Act.
    Government could take control of the railways, mines, land and industry. Censored newspapers, diluted beer and created British Summer Time
  • Autumn (not sure around what dates) - Women's Organisations formed

    Eg. Women's Police Organisation and Women's Hospital Corps
  • First bombing

    From German waships. Killed 119 people in Scarborough
  • Munitions crisis

    British troops were running out of bullets and munitions.
    Suffragettes formed "women's march for jobs" to encourage women to work in factories.
    Government also released lots of propaganda
  • Conscription- Second Military Service Bill

    For single men from ages 18-40
  • Conscription- First Military Service Bill

    For married men
  • Battle of the Somme

    Badly organised, no strategy. Repeated the failed strategy losing even more men.
    Had lost more men in that day then in any other previous battle
  • Battle of the Somme film

    A way of propaganda to reassure families it wasn't "too bad" and to make it seem appealing to men for "future use"

    Little to show for the half a million casualties.

  • (Throughout Nov) Rationing

    After April accident with German U-boats food was VERY low and so a voluntary rationing scheme was introduced. This failed and instead increased food prices as well as the queues,

    Rationing of sugar started in January, but by April meat, butter and cheese was rationed everywhere
  • War is officially over

    11.11 11/11/1918 war is officially over, Armistice is signed
  • Right to vote

    After brilliant war effort by women, goverment realised women were capable and passed a law (earlier in December 1917 but now only just carried out) to say that married women over 30 could vote. It was a step in the right direction
