Battle of Marne
The battle was fought between France and Britain against Germany. Germany attempted to invade Belgium. The Schlieffen Plan worked at first because it forced allies to back down into the Marne river. French counterattacked, baking the Germans up 40 miles. The battle allowed Russia more time to move around. -
Lusitania Disaster
The Lusitania, British passenger liner, was sunk by German ship, U-boat because the German believed there was allied ammunition on the ship. The disaster angered Americans because killed 128 Americans. The event caused America to turn away from Germany. -
The Somme
The First Battle of The Somme was a bloody trench warfare with over 1.2 million casualties. Poison gas, rifles, machine guns, tanks, and mines were all used during this 3 year battle. The British army fired shots at German trenches and went out of their trenches to advance on the German army. The area between the trenches was called "no mans land." -
Zimmerman Note
The Zimmerman note was a telegraph proposing an alliance with Mexico in return for territory in Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona. It was written from the German foreign minister to the German Ambassador. -

President Woodrow Wilson declared war against Germany and then soon on Austria-Hungary. -
Russia Surrenders
Russia surrenders to the Germans because the Bolsheviks overthrew the Russian government. The group was led by Vladimer Lenin who wanted Russia to pull out of the war. -
Germany Collapses
Germany was too tired to continue fighting in the war so they dropped out. -
Treaty of Versailles
The treaty marked the end of the war and created nine nations. Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Yugoslavia were some of those nations. The treaty said the Central Powers much surrender colonies.
