    The Japanese Invasion of China, also known as the Second Sino-Japanese War occured on July 7th, 1937 when the Japanese invaded China in hopes to expand their empire. They invaded China to increase their economy and source of raw materials. The outcome of the invasion was the surrender of the Japanese.     Blitzkrieg meaning "lightning war" first took place in Poland in 1939. The Germans continued to use lightning warfare to defeat their enemies. Lightning war can be explained as warfare using mobile forces and significant amounts of firearms.     Operation Barbarossa
    Operation Barbarossa is the plan made by Adolf Hitler to invade the Soviet Union. With over 3 million German soldiers, Hitler and his army invaded the Soviet Union to take over the capital city of Moscow. The Germans overestimated themselves.     On December 7th 1941, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes flew over the American naval base, Pearl Harbor, located in Hawaii. The Japanese bombed the naval base because they were cut off from all trade with the United States. The Japanese were in desperate search of raw materials such as oil and rubber.     Wannsee Conference
    The Wannsee Conference was the meeting of the top 15 Nazi bureacrats. Organized by SS chief Heinrich Himmler, the group met in Berlin, a section of a town known as Wannsee. The group came together to discuss the final decision.The final decision was the attempt to try to exterminate the entire Jewish population in Europe.     On July 24 1943, the British released Operation Gomorrah. This was the bombing of the city Humburg in Germany. The British bombed this city to get back at the Germans for committing a bombing raid on England earlier in July, killing at least 167 English civilians.     On the morning of June 6th 1944, 156,000 British, American, and Canadian soldiers landed on the shore of the French coast. This event took place becasue the allied forces were trying to release the French from German control. The goal of this mssion was to successfully drive the Germans inland, and then to take back the control of France. The outcome of this mission was successful.     Operation Thunderclap
    Operation Thunderclap was code for a plan that was supposed to tak place earlier in 1944. The plan was to bomb Berlin. The calculations estimated that there would be more than 220,000 casualties of the plan were to take place.     This battle was the major event in which the United States Marines landed and captured the island of Iwo Jima from the Japanese. The Americans fought and defeated over 23,000 Japanese soldiers who were defending the island.     President Harry Truman insisted that the United States use the most advanced technology to retaliate against the Japanese. On August 6th 1945, the Americans dropped 5 tons woth of atomic bombs on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
