    Benito Mussolini was the dictator of Italy during World War II. Mussolini was a fascist and developed the brown shirts in his early years and that is how he rose to power. He arranged an alliance with Germany and Japan. Together, these three nations worked to conquer Europe.

    Italian Invasion of Ethiopia
    Italy wanted to get revenge on Ehtiopia after loosing to them in 1896. Italy beat Ethiopia because they had outdated weapons. Mussolini used tanks, machine guns, poison gas, and airplanes to invade Ethiopia. After the Ethiopian king asked the League of Nations for help, the League of Nations decided to set up sanctions or penalties against Italy. Italy was too strong for the League of Nations so no sanctions were passed.

    Occupation of the Rhineland
    The Rhineland was a strip of land between France and Germany, that was demilitarized. Even though this was part of Germany, the Treaty of Versailles said that Germany only had political control of this land. Hitler saw that it would be understandable bring in military in Guernica. Germany moved some of theri army and officers into the area. France and Britain did not do anything about this. France was having internal issues in the country. Britain found Hitler's actions understandable.

    3,000 Americans formed the Abraham Lincoln Battalion and fought against Franco Francisco in Spain.Hitler and Mussolini joined Franco with troops ,weapons, tanks, and fighter planes. This was a conflict between the nationalists and the loyalists. The U.S remained neutral during this conflict.

    The air raid in Guernica was bombed by volunteers sent by Hitler under Mussolini's control. Mussolini and Hitler both were in on this plan. Mussolini and Hitler called this group of planes and volunteers the Condor Legion.

    Neville Chamberlain

    British Prime Minister during World War II. Neville signed the Munich agreement to give the Sudetenland to Germany and he had an appeasment foreign policy which was a policy to try and avoid war.
  • The Anschluss

    The Anschluss was a union of Austria and Germany. Austria's chancellor denied to agree with Hitler's demands. Hitler demanded his men to "preserve order" which really meant take over Austria or kill Austria's chancellor.
  • Munich Conference

    This was an agreement to allow Germany to take over Sudetenland. Hitler broke this agreement later on by invading Poland. This invasion might have started World War II. This agreement was to help Germany become neutral. These countries wanted neutrality in Germany to not start a war, but Hitler wanted war so he broke the agreement.

    At first Hitler wanted the Germans in the region of western Czechoslovakia called Sudetenland to be given autonomy. Hitler wanted Sudetenland because France and Britain were not willing to go to war for this land.

    The Axis Alliance took over control of southern France after Germany took over northern France. This section of France remainded under control of the Third Reich in Germany until the end of the war in 1945.
  • Operation Barbarossa

    Hitler wanted to take out the threat of Communism and by doing so had to invade Russia. Even though Hitler had a pact with Stalin the invasion commenced. A Blitzkrieg strategy was used and close to the end of October the German forces were nearly at the gates of Moscow. Many pockets of Soviet troops became trapped and were forced to either fight to the death or surrender.

  • Attack on Pearl Harbor

    Attack on Pearl Harbor
    Japanese Imperial Army attacked the US military base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. Japans reason was to keep the US out of the Pacific Theatre, but this just made the US join in on World War II, with them joined their alliances, Britain and France. Japan also attacked the US because the US would island-hop or take over the Japanese islands. Japan used special aircrafts were called kamikazes, they are for suicidal missions. The US used their radar and sonar systems to detect Japan's aircrafts.

    Battle of Stalingrad

    The batle was fought between the Axis Alliance and the Soviet Union, ignoring the no pact agreement. The Soviet would win the city of Stalingard in the end of the war.
    The war streched from July 1942 to Febuary 1943. It was the turning point in Europe. When the Soviets launched a massive counter attack and pushed towards Berlin, Germany.Defending Stalingrad the Soviets lost a total of 1,100,000 soldiers.

    Two battles took place. First Battle of El Alamein (July 1 – July 27, 1942) the advance of Axis troops on Alexandria was blunted by the Allies, when the German troops tried to outflank the allied position. At the Second Battle of El Alamein (October 23 – November 11, 1942) Allied forces broke the Axis line and forced them all the way back to Tunisia.

    After the nucleur bombing on Hiroshima, and losing many people from their navy, The US surrendered the war on August 14. They would officaly surrender later on September 2nd. V-J Day was declared because the Japanese Emporer was horrified at the distruction of the atomic bombs america had unleashed.On September 2 formal surrender cerimonies took place on the U.S battle ship Missouri in tokyo Bay.Macarthur says today the guns are silent.
