    Assassination of Arch-Duke Ferdinand
    On June 28, 1914 a young Serbian nationalist shot and killed the Arch-Duke Ferdinand of Austria and his wife. Ferdinand was the next in line for the Austro-Hungary throne. This event causes Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia even though the attack was out of a Serbian terrorist group and Serbia itself.

    By August 4, 1914 two major alliances start to form. One of the major alliances, The Triple Alliance, consisted of Italy, Austria-Hungary, Germany. The second major alliance , The Triple Entente, consisted of Russia, France, Britain and much, much later the U.S.

    The Schlieffen Plan and The Beginning of WWI
    On August 4, 1914 the World War one begins and to start it off the Schlieffen Plan is put into affect. Created by Alfred von Shlieffen which had been thought of long before World War I. The idea was that Germany could invade France in a matter of weeks so they would not have to battle a two-front war against Russia and France.

    The Russian army enters East Prussia on August 17,1914. Russia had 7,467 casualties while Germany had 1,297. The battle ended in the Russian army retreating but they had still managed to get into Prussia to make Germany fight a two front war, splitting the army.

    It lasted from the 5th of September until the 9th of September. This attack resulting in a german loss caused the germans to start to be less aggressive as they were during the Schliefen Plan. Even though the allies were outnumbered in this battle they managed to create a wound in the german divisions.

    During WWI German had threatened that if any ship had tries to get close to England for supplies they would sink it. On May 7th 1915 German submarines sunk a passenger ship killing 1,198 including 124 U.S citizens. This caused outrage in the U.S leading to the U.S entering the war against Germany.

    Serbia is Invaded by the Central Powers
    On October 6th 1915 Germany, Austria, and Bulgaria all invade Serbia. The central powers quickly capture Belgrade which followed by a huge retreat of the serbian nation. Most of the soldiers and families fleeing went to Albania.

    Allied troops, wanting to lead the German forces away from Verdun, launch a full out frontal attack ending in huge amounts of casualties. 419,000 British, 194,000 French, and 650,000 German. During this several month battle the Allies gain only nearly six miles.

    U.S Enters the War
    On April 6th 1917 the U.S finally enters the war despite the long discouragement from President Woodrow Wilson. When voted on the Senate had an overwhelmingly huge support for the war. The U.S army went from 100,000 to a million in a few days.

    Germany and Allies sign Peace treaty.
    Germany finally signs the Peace treaty ending the war in Western Europe. During this time several new countries had formed from old ones and several uprisings had taken place. During WWI there were an estimated 38 million casualties.
