    Germany wanted to attack France, and Belgium was their "free passage". Germany first send a letter to Belgium demanding them to give them a free passage, but they refuse because they were neutral, and because of that Germany forcefully occupied the country as an enemy, attacking it.

So; it joined their allies: France, Britain and Russia, declaring war to Germany and the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

    In Russia a new government was installed (communism-by Bolshevik), so Germans decided to sign a peace treaty with them, and the treaty benefit them in land and their army. This cause problems with U.S, France, and Great Britain.

It was not so convenient to Germany because with this treaty they had to pay all the reparations and damages after the war (taxes), and cause German expansion, economic downfall and hyperinflation, vulnerability for the German people, and cause years after the WWII.
