    Franz Ferdinand was shot by the Black Hand on a visit to the Bosnian capital of Sarajevo to inspect its armed forces. The Black Hand was a Serbian nationalist group that assassinated Ferdinand because Serbia wanted Bosnia and Herzegovina to become Serbian territory, but Austria-Hungary had annexed the nations.

    Sinking of the Lusitania
    The RMS Lusitania was a British passenger ship that was also secretly transporting ammunition. Despite warnings for Americans not to board the ship, some did not heed the warning and 120 American lives were lost when a German submarine torpedoed the ship. This event almost caused America to join the war, but Germany appeased them by promising restricted submarine warfare, which means that they would surface the submarines before firing torpedoes.

    Woodrow Wilson, then president of the United States, signed the National Defense Act which expanded the size of the National Guard, and established the Reserve Officer Training Course (ROTC) which trained students who were to enter the army. This law also updated the Militia act of 1903.
