  • Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia

    When Archduke Franz Ferdinand was assassinated by a Serbian nationalist, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. By the alliance system the war became bigger than originally planned over the conflict.
  • Germany declares war on Russia

    Germany made a treaty to support Austria-Hungary by the alliance system and then declared war on Russia.
  • Germany declares war on France

    Germany declared war on France because France was Russia's ally.
  • Germany invades Belgium

    Germany follows the Schlieffen Plan and invades Belgium to cause the fall of France so the German armies could defeat Russia.

    Belgium allies go to the Marne River to stop German armies.

  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    German U-Boats sank the British ship the Lusitania for revenge of the British blockade and 128 American troops were killed.
  • U.S. Labor Shortage

    United States started getting shortage of labor because we had been shipping millions of dollars of supplies to support our allies.

    trench warfare in which the total casualties suffered were 1.2 million by the end.
  • Election of 1916

    Wilson was renominated but the Republicans elected Charles Evans Hughes as Supreme Court Justice.
    Hughes thought he was president and he had won the election until someone broke the news to him.
  • Call for Peace

    Wilson tried to call for peace. "a peace without victory...a peace between equals" but this doesn't work.
  • Kaiser announcement

    Kaiser announced that U-boats would sink all of the ships in British waters whether or not they were neutral or not. Wilson was surprised since he called for peace already.
  • Zimmerman Note

    Note sent to Mexico from Germany asking for an alliance and stating if Mexico agreed then they would get all of their land back from the United States.
  • Wilson's War Resolution

    President Wilson delivered his war resolution speech in the Capitol building. America needed to join war in order to have a future of peace and freedom. Preparation for war began.
  • Selective Service Act

    Required all men to register for the army and would be randomly selected for military duty.
  • America Joins War

    Americans supported their allies but they prefered to support them from the safety of their country and not get involved but by 1917 America mobilzed for war against the Central Powers in order to prevent Germany from destroying U.S. ships and to make sure the allies would repay us for the millions of dollars America put into supplies for them.
  • German famine

    Due to the British blockade on Germany, they were not receiving supplies to grow crops or food itself so Germans slowly began to starve and bt 1917 750,000 Germans had starved to death.
  • U.S. Launches Ships

    Construction of ships took a much shorter time so in one day the U.S. launched 95 ships.
  • Collapse of Germany

    Austria-Hungary surrendered to the Allies. Eventually after German sailors mutinied against government authority on the same say the kaiser gave up the throne.

    Germany agreed to cease-fire and signed the armistice and that ended the war.
  • End of Selevtive Service Act

    24 million men registered because of this act by the end of it. Most entrees were uneducated. African Americans served also and more than half of them served in France.
