  • Japanese Invasion of China

    Military conflict faught primarily between the republic of china and the empire of japan.
    Why: Kwantung army of the empire of japan invaded manchurra.
    Effects/Impacts: Japanese placed former Qing emperor puy; onto it's throne,creating a puppet regime with the fiction of an independent state.
  • Germany invasion of Poland

    What Happened: Germany invaded poland. With more than 2,000 tanks and over 1,000 planes.
    Why: To give germans lebensraum in eastern europe.
    Effects/Impacts: After heavy sheiling and bombing, waksaw surrendered to the germans on september 27, 1939. Britain and France, standing by their gurantee of poland's border, had declared war on germany on september 3, 1939.
  • German Blitzkreig(1939-1940)

    What Happened: Military tatic to create disorginization among enemy forces through the use of mobile forces and locally concentrated firepower.
    Why: Shorten military campaigns
    Effects/Impacts: Preserves human lives, and limits the expenditme of artillery. German forces tried out blitzkreig in polan 1939 before successfully employing the tatic invasions of belgium.
  • Operation Barbarossa

    Adolf hitler launched his armies eastward in a massive invasion of the soviet union: Three great army groups with three million german soldiers,150 divisions,and three thousand tanks smashed across the frontier into soviet territory.
    Why: Covered a front from the north cape to the black sea,a distance of two thousand miles.
    Effects/Impacts: Barbarossa was the crucial turning point in WW2 for its failure forced nazi germany to fight a twofront war against a coalition possesing superior resources
  • Pearl Harbor(1941)

    Hundreds of japanese fighter planes attacked the American naval base at pearl harbor.
    Why: United States were unhappy with japan's increasingly belligerent attitude towards china.
    Effects/Impacts: Japanese managed to destroy 20 American naval vessels,including eight enormous battle ships&more than 300 airplanes.More than 2,000 soldiers &sailors died,and another 1000 were wounded . A day later, Franklin D. Roosevelt asked congress to declare war on japan.
  • Operation Gomorrah(1943)

    British bombers raid Hamburg, Germany ,by night in operation Gomorrah. Britain suffered deaths of 167 civilians as a result of german bombing raids in july.
    Effects/Impacts: More than 30,000 people killed,280,000 buildings including industrial and muntions plants. The effect on hitler,too, was significant. He refused to visit the burned-out cities,as the ruins bespoke nothing but the end of war for him.
  • D-Day(Normandy Invasion 19444)

    156,000 american,british, and canadian forces landed on five beaches along a 50 mile stretch of the heavily fortified coast of france's normandy region.
    Why: D-Day was the first step of a massive military campaign to free europe from nazi control,creating a second front in europe and trapping germany between the soviet union, the United states& the united kingdom
  • Battle of the Bulge(1945)

    What happened:Hitler attempted to split the allied armies in northwest europe by means of a surprise blitzkreig thrust through the ardennes to antwerp.Caught off-guard american units fought desperate battles to stem the german advance at st-vith,elsenborn ridge.
    Why: Attempt to push the allied front line west from northern france to northwestern Belgium
  • Wannsee Conference(1942)

    What happened: Meeting of senior officials of nazi germany,held in berlin subulb of wannsee on January 1942.
    Why: To cordinate the final soulition, in which the nazi's would attempt to exterminate the jewish population of europe,an estimated 11 million persons.
  • Operation Thunerclap

    Bomb the eastern-most cities of germany to discript the transport infrastructive behind what was becoming the eastern front.
    Why: To demonstrate to the german population in even more devastating fashion.
