    On September 1,1939 at 4:45 am, the invasion began. The German used a strategy called blitzkreig, or lightening war.Nazi's scrambled to head off hostilities with western powers. Germany reached warsaw which advanced 140 miles in the first week of the invasion. This was the first time Poland was partitioned by it's most powerful neigbors.

    German Blitzkrieg
    Blitzkrieg is a military tactic designed to created disorganization among enemy forces through the use of mobile forces and locally concentrated firepower. German first used blitzkrieg in Poland in 1939. This resulted in short military campaign and preserved human lives and limited the use of artillery. It wasn't a successful until the invasions of Belgium, the Netherlands and France in 1940.

    This was the turning point of WW2. It was named after Frederick Barbarossa. It was the code name for the German invasion of the Soviet Union. It forced Germany to fight a two-front war against superior sources. It was originally supposed to happen in May because of the necessity of the german invasion of Yukoslavia and Greece in April of that same year.

    Pearl Harbor
    At about 8am, hundreds of Japanese fighter planes attacked the american naval base near Honolulu, Hawaii. The devestating attack lasted 2 hours. The Japanese destroyed 20 American naval vassels including 8 battleships and 200 airplanes. More than 2,000 soldiers were dead and another 1,000 were wounded. The Amercan Congress declared war on Japan.

  • Wannsee Conference

    This was when the Nazi party and the German Government officials gathered at a villa in Wannsee to discuss the final solution of the Jewish Question. The final solution was code name for annihilation of the European Jews. Hitler authorized a scheme for a mass murder. Approximately 11,000,000 would fall under the "Final Solution."

    The US surrender in the Phillipines. approximately 75,000 Filipino and American troops on Bataan were forced to make an arduous 65-mile march to prison camps. They were subjected to harsh treatment by Japanese guards.

    This was when British bombers raided Hamburg, Germany. At the same time Americans bombed it by day in its own "Blitz Week." In the evening British dropped 2,300 tons of bombs on Hamburg in just a few hours. More than 1,500 German civilians were killed. British attacks continued until November of that year.

It involved the 287,000 troops of the U.S. Tenth Army against 130,000 soldiers of the Japanese Thirty-second Army.Japan had lost more than 77,000 soldiers and the Allies had suffered more than 65,000 casualties including 14,000 dead.

    The United States becomes the first and only nation to use atomic weaponry during wartime. It started when the US dropped an atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima. This was the end of WW2 but the start of the cold War. IT immediately killed 80,000 people.
