The archduke of Austria-Hungary got assassinated on June 28th. That triggered Austria-Hungary to declare war on Serbia on July 28th. That was the very beginning of the war.

During this month Germany declared war on Russia, France and Belgium. Britain declared war on Germany. Austria-Hungary declared war on Russia. France and Britain declared war on Austria-Hungary. Japan declared war on Germany. Austria-Hungary declared war on Belgium. And the U.S. declared its neutrality.

This was the second battle of Ypres. This one was really important because the Germans launched the first successful gas attack ever. By the end of the war everyone would be using chemical weapons though.

This was the Battle of the Somme. After a seven day artillery bombardment, the Allied troops attacked the Germans and ended up having 50,000 casualties on the first day of fighting. The battle didn’t end until November.

My veteran, Norvel P. Clotfelter, had to go from Camp Travis to San Antonio three times to get vaccinations that were required for all the soldiers. They got put into their groups of around 160 people and got assigned ranks. He was a corporal when ranks first got assigned.

This day was proclaimed a national holiday by the president for the furthering of the liberty bond issue. Norvel got a day off for that so they hung out with other squads. They went and played a baseball game against another squad, then they had boxing matches. That night they watched fireworks too.

Norvel and got quarantined for measles and mumps. Half the camp was quarantined and only one person in his squad had measles. He had to quit school because they got quarantined though. That day he drilled and went on a hike as well.

Norvel was made supply sergeant. He went to the hospital to get his tonsils taken out this day too. He also had to make a list of sizes for clothes for the whole camp. He also has had to be the acting company clerk for a few days.

They had to transfer a lot of guys and bring in some too. They ended up going from 160 men to 119. He also got multiple letters from his family but he hasn’t written back in 2 weeks. He was aso put in quarantine again.
