    Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
    Archduke Ferdinand was the heir to the throne of Austria-Hungary and was married to Sophie. He announced his trip and with the help from the neighboring country Serbia, assassins were recruited and trained to kill him and his wife while they travel. The Austria-Hungary government saw this as a direct attack and declared war on Serbia then Germany declared war on Russia to help its ally Austria-Hungary that led to WW1.

    The Lusitania was a cruise ship that carried passengers and cargo. On May 7, the shop was approaching the coast of Ireland when a German U-boat (underwater boat) spotted it and began to fire. A torpedo hit the side and caused an explosion killing 1198 people leaving only 761 surviving.

    A German military leader named Arthur Zimmermann sent a telegram to Mexico asking for alliance against the United States and in return they will help gain the lost territories such as Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico. The telegram was interrupted and the Americans became very angry. Because of this, the U.S. began protecting its ships to Europe with troops and causing Germany to sink 8 more ships.

    President Wilson thought the world must be made safe for democracy as he appeared before congress to ask for declaration of war against Germany. After the sinking of the Lusitania which killed 128 American and caused a public outrage in the US.On April 4, the US senate voted in favor of war by 82 votes to 6. Two days later, the house of representatives delivered their own yes vote by 373 votes to 50. This was also the formal announcement of the entrance of the US to World War 1.

    Wilhelm's abdication was announced on November 9,1918 before he had actually agreed to it. He agreed to leave when the leaders of the army told him he had lost their support as well. He bought a house in Netherlands were he had to deal with the death of his first wife and his son in 1920.After 2 decades in exile, he died in Netherlands on June 4 at the age of 82.

    The league of Nations were formed to help settle problem between countries to help prevent wars in the future. The Senate rejected the league of Nations because they were unhappy that they were blocked out of treaty negotiations. However, this was rumored to be linked with senator Henry Lodge and President Wilson who were engaged in a personal battle. President Wilson insisted on having full control over the terms of the treaty, but Congress wasn't satisfied.
