    Big Bertha was the largest weapon used by any army. The gun could fire projectiles weighing up to 1,785 pounds. The name Big Bertha was given to the artillery piece in honor of Bertha Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach, owner of the Krupp firm which made the weapon.

    Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Sophie are shot to death by a Bosnian Serb. Austria had been quick to blame Serbia. Serbia had already had a large Russian army on their side so Austria had asked Germany to help them out. this was the spark of WWI

    the Battle of Gallipoli was an unsuccessful military operated war. this battle led to New Zealand's involvement in this war. the battle was made to end WW1 but it was very unsuccessful and had ended badly.
  • Letters

    Over 2 billion letters were sent out during WW1. Most of the time letters were for the soldiers on the front line. During the Battle of Gallipoli over 30,000 letters were unopened due to the thousands of death every single day.
  • Lusitania sinks

    Lusitania sinks
    The ship was torpedoed and sunk by the submerged German boat submarine. The sinking of the Lusitania disrupted America's peace during World War 1 and drew the nation into the war on the side of the Allies. the sinking of the ship had caused public outrage in the US against Germany.
  • Trench Food

    The catering staff put the food in the cooking pot but at the time they had called it dixies, petrol cans or old jam jars and carried food up to the front-line. The food was always cold by the time it got to the front -line. Eventually, the army moved the field kitchens closer to the front-line but they were never able to get close enough to provide regular hot food for the men. Sometimes soldiers could buy stoves. When they could obtain the fuel, they could heat their food and brew some tea.

    the Battle of Verdun was the worst battle yet. it was a battle between the French and the Germans. the battle had been started by the Germans because the fortress blocked major German communication routes.
  • Somme

    the battle of Somme was started for the Allied force to control the Somme river and guard it against all Germans. But that did not stop the Germans. they had ended up digging deep trenches. the result of this was the allies had more lost than the Germans.

    The first use of tanks on the battlefield was at the Battle of Somme on 15 September 1916. Although it wasn't very successful. Many broke down, but nearly a third succeeded in the batte for protection.
  • The Zimmerman Note

    The Zimmerman telegram was a hidden message sent by German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmerman. It had been sent to Mexico. The communication was an attempt to convince Mexico into joining the United States for the Allies in Europe. The note had said a promise to Mexico that if they had joined them, They would get the countries they had lost back.

    WW1 had begun off of votes. the major allies were Great Britain, chine and the soviet union. The U.S had entered this war because the sinking of Lusitania had carried Americans on the ship. Many events made the situation bigger and then the Zimmerman note was the U.S last straw.

    Russia was ruled by a powerful crowd called the Tsar. Life for the people was very difficult no matter if they were peas[ant or rich. They worked for little pay, often went without food, and were exposed to extremely ill conditions.

    After the revolution, Russia was left in disasters. Russia being involved had created a big disaster for them that backfired even harder. Russia needed to leave the war to build a promising communist state.

    The red cross was the best option for sick/injured soldiers. many soldiers got illnesses or diseases rather than injuries. the Spanish flu was the main illness throughout WW1. it was called this because it hit Spain first. The illness was caused by animals and birds. many thought it was because of poison gas but it really wasn't.

    The Battle of Chateau-Thierry had started because Germany had a lot of lands claimed with no army to protects. The Allies also saw this as an opportunity to claim. So they reacted quickly and had made this their second win.

    The Battle of Argonne forest was the last battle of WW1. The Germans at the time had a very weak army. The allies saw this as an opportunity. The Germans had then backed out.

    World war I had an armistice between allies and Germany that ended the fighting on Western Front in Europe. Armistice is a French word for "arms' "stoppage". This event had taken place on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month on November 11, 1918. It had ended the fight but it took 6 months of negotiation for the treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles signed
    WW1 officially ended the war between Germany and the Allies when the Treaty of Versailles was signed at the Palace of Versailles. The treaty had stated Germany's consequences after they had taken responsibility for WW1 and millions of dealths
  • First meeting of the League of Nations

    First meeting of the League of Nations
    The first meeting had taken place in Paris six days after the signing of the Versailles Treaty. The headquarters had been moved to Geneva where the first assembly was held. The League was laid out by all the countries taking part in the Paris Peace Conference.
