Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia. Germany offered support to Austria wrongly thinking that Russia - who was alliad with Serbia - would not mobilise. So Russia did mobilise and then, through their alliance with France, called on them to mobilise as well.

Germany declared war on France. They sent troops into Belgium. Then a foreign British secretary, Sir Edward Grey, sent an ultumatum to Germany, demanding their withdrawal from the neutral Belgium.

Australia gets involved in the war through their alliance with Britain and France, so they all go to Gallipoli to fight Turkey. Unfortunately, they landed on a small beach with really steep cliffs just ahead. Many diad as they struggled to make a shelter beteath the cliffs. Evern more diad as they tried to climb the cliffs. It wasn't very succesfull as the Turks had the advantage, being stationed at the top of the cliffs, they were able to shoot down at the allied troops.

This was the only succesful attack made by Australia. It was a hand-to-hand battle and over 2,000 men died. It was intended to be a diversion as other troops broke out of the ANZAC perimeter battlefield. Seven Victorian Crosses were awarded for bravery.

This was the first ever major bettle fought by Australian troops. It was supposed to distract the Germans from the battle at Somme. The Australians had 5,533 casualties. Together with the British they lost a total of 7080 men. While the German's only lost around 1,000.

There was a peace confrence in Paris attended by Australia, America, Britain, France, Italy, New Zealand, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Austria-Hungary, Turkey and Bulogaria. It was to set the peace terms for the defeated countries.
