    Austria with the support of Germany sends an ultimatum to Serbia. The 3 demands were: Serbia must end all anti Austrian agitation, Serbia must punish any official involved in assassination plot, and Serbia must allow Austria to join in the investigation. Serbia did not agree to the ultimatum, especially the 3rd point.

    More than two million soldiers fought in the Battle of the Marne, and 100,000 of them were killed or wounded. On September 9, the Germans began a fighting retreat to the Aisne River.     German U-boat, U-20, launched a torpedo. The torpedo hit the right side of the ship. The Lusitania sunk within 18 minutes.Of the 1,959 people on board, 1,198 died. Americans were outraged to learn 128 U.S. civilians were killed.
