  • Assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

    Assasination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand
    He was the heir to the Austia-Hungary thone and was assasinated in Sarajevo. His wife was killed also. Gavrilo Princip was a Serbian nationalist and the man who killed Ferdinand. This is one of the roadways that led to World War 1.
  • Battle of the Marne

    Battle of the Marne
    The Battle of the Marne was one of the first World War battles. It was fought on September 5th through the 12th in 1914. It ended in an Allied victory over the German Army. This battle finally slowed down the Germans.
  • Schlieffen Plan

    Schlieffen Plan
    This was Germany's first strike strategy. It called for wiping out France quickly and then turning East to get Russia.
  • Sinking of the Lusitania

    Sinking of the Lusitania
    Construction of the Lusitania was very long and it was the fastest liner afloat. On May 1, 1915 the ship made it's voyage to Liverpool. It was torpedoed by a German U-boat a few days later and 1,924 people were killed. 114 of those people were Americans.
  • Sussex Pledge

    Sussex Pledge
    The Sussex pledge was a promise made by Germany to the United States saying they wouldn't fire on any ships without warning. Early in 1916, Germany had put forth a policy of unrestricted U-boat warfare, allowing armed ships to be torpedoed without warning.

    Zimmerman Note
    The Zimmermann Note was an from the Germans to Mexico to make war against the United States. The proposal was intercepted and decoded by the British. What this telegram proposed made America angry and helped generate support for the United States declaration of war on Germany in April.
  • Selective Service Act

    Selective Service Act
    The Selective Service Act gave the federal government permission to build a national army for the American entry into World War I through drafting men. It was planned in December 1916 and brought to President Wilson's attention not long after the break in relations with Germany in February 1917.
  • The Convoy System

    The Convoy System
    In the beginning of the war, merchant ships carrying supplies to the allies were targeted aggressvely by German U-Boats. Since there were not enough destroyers and destroyer escorts to protect each ship, convoys were brought about. In these convoys, merchant ships were in a huge group together and protected by the others that were armed.

    Sedition Act
    This act stated that no speech or action that will encourage rebellion would be tolerated. "Disloyalty will be dealt with a firm hand of stern repression" - Wilson.
  • Treaty of Versailles

    Treaty of Versailles
    The Treaty of Versailles was one of the peace treaties at the end of World War I. It put an end to the war between Germany and the Allied Powers. The Central Powers on the German side of World War I were dealt with in separate treaties.
