    The Soviet troops invaded Hungary to liberate country from the Nazis, April 18, 1955, Nagy was replaced as Hungarian prime minister and expelled from communist party over liberal policies.

    Yalta Conference
    They discussed Stalin conditions. They also discussed the future of Germany, Eastern Europe and the United Nations. They also thought Germany would take on most the responsibility for the war. Roosevelt and many other Americans viewed it as proof that the spirit of US- Soviet war time cooperation carried on.

  • Korean War (Start)

    Korean War (Start)
    In May 1945, Korea divides into communist North Korea and anti-communist South Korea. Russia controls the north and the US controls the south. On june 25, 1950, North Korea invades the south and continues on to the capital of Seoul. In July, US gets deafted at Osan. America expected this.

    Truman Doctrine
    With this doctrine, President Harry S. Truman established that the US would provide political, military and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat. Truman requested congress provide $400,000,000 worth of aid to Greek and Turkish Governments. He attempted to justify why he did ask for so much

  • Marshall Plan

    Marshall Plan
    Europe was devistated by years of conflict during WWII. Millions had been killed, 16 nations, including Germany, became part of the program and shaped the assistnace they required. European nations recieved nearly $13 billion in aid. Marshall Plan nations were assisted greatly in economic recovery.

  • Building Berlin Wall

    Building Berlin Wall
    In May, the Red Army captures Berlin. On my 8, Berlin gets divided. On june 30, 1946, Demaraction line between East and West Germany is safe guarded. About two years later, the Soviet Union begins the Berlin Blockade.

  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    After WWII, the allies partitioned the defeated Germany into a Soviet- occupied zone and a French occupied zone. Construction began on a tight airlift. The wall had 4500 secetions of reinforced concrete weighing three tons each. New wall included seventy nine miles of fencing and nearly three hundred watch towers.

  • NATO

    NATO
    in 1949, twelve states: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Britain, Iceland, Italy, Luxemberg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, and US sign the NATO. In 1950, Eisenhower was appointed supreme NATO commander. In 1952, Greece and Turkey join.

    Rosenberg Spy Case
    Julius and Ethel were convicted of conspiracy to commit esplonage and are put to death in ithe electric chair. TO be more specific, heading a spy ring that passed top secret information concerning the atomic bomd. Julius was the fist to be executed.

  • Korean War (End)

    Korean War (End)
    Eisenhower is elected. He defeats Illinois senator to become president of the United States. He promised he was going to end the war. On july 27, 1953, North and South agree to a truce. Korea is still divided, but the two countires agree to create a neutral zone called the Demilitarized zone to seperate countries. To this day though, Korea is still divied.
  • NIkita comes to power

    NIkita comes to power
    Nikita's selection was a crucial first step in his rise to power. Nikita worshiped and was extremely loyal to Stalin. In the 1940's, Nikita held a number of important positions in Soviet Government. In 1953, he secured enough backing up to be named secretary of the communist party. In February 1955, Nikita pushed Malenkov out of premiership and replaced him with Nikita's puppet.

  • Warsaw Pact

    Warsaw Pact
    In 1955, two alliances of differering ideologies spheres of influcence joined. Inn 1968, Albania leaves the Warsaw Pact because they are responding to the invasion of Czech. Due to this, it weakes the Warsaw Pact.

  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    The first mishap occured on April 15, 1961, when eight bombers left Niicaragua to bomb cuban Airfields. As news broke of the attack, photos of the repainted US planes became public on April 17, the Cuban exit invasion force, known as Brigade 2506, landed on beaches along the Bay of Pigs and immediately came under fire.

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    An American U-2 spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sues being built by the Soviet Union. Afet many long and difficult meetings, Kennedy placed a naval blockade around Cuba. No one was sure how Nikita would react to this. IF they got rid of the weapons, the US would not invade Cuba.

    Fall of the Berlin Wall
    Peter Fecher, 18, was shot while trying to escape from the Berlin Wall. He became an icon of the brutality of the wall. Later, on April 5, Roundtable agreed is signed in poland legalizing independent trade.

  • Unification of Germany

    Unification of Germany
    The Congress of Vienna created German Confederation. They did this because they watned a higher power. In 1846, this was the beginning of Europe's last major food crisis and famine. The objective of Vienna was to provide a long term peace for Europe by setting critical issues arising from the French Revolution.

  • Gorbachev Elected

    Gorbachev Elected
    Gorbachev's election in 1990 was far different from other "elections." He had worked hard to open up the political process in the Soviet Union. On March 14, 1990, the congress of People's Deputes elected Gorbachev to a five year term as president. He worked hard to ensure congress gave him a two thirds vote.
