Zalaikha lives in Afghanistan, and must live witha cleft lip. That all changes when the American's come. They offer to fix her lip, her older sister is getting married, and she's relearning how to read and write frmo a woman in the market. Though there are complications with the date of the surgery and her sister dies from burns from a 'cooking accident'. The American's so end up fixing her lip though, and her father allows her to go to school.
