Women's Suffrage Movement

  • Susan B. Anthony

    Was a leading proponent of woman suffrage. Founded the National Women Suffrage Association (NWSA) with Elizabeth Cady Stanton.
  • Illegal Voting

    Suffragist leaders tried to achieve there goal. This was successful in Wyoming in 1869 and Utah, Colorado and Idaho by the 1890's.. OWmen pursued court cases to test the 14th Amendment.
  • Carry Nation and the WCTU

    They tried to urge saloonkeepers to stop selling alcohol. The WCTU became the the largest women's group in the nation's history. Provided women with expanded public roles.
  • NAWSA Formed

    NWSA united with another group in 1890 to form the NAWSA. Other leaders besidesAnthony and Stanton included Lucy Stone and author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", Julia Ward Howe.
  • Carrie Chapman Catt and New NAWSA Tactics

    Was the President of the NAWSA after Susan B. Anthony. Served from 1900-1904. Resumed presidency in 1915. In 1919, Congress passed the 19th Amendment.
