    He left Monroe at 8 o'clock and arrived at Janesville at 11. He then traveled south to Clinton Junction. He then arrived at Camp Utley soon after.

    William hears that the regiment was to be paid and some of the cannons to be sent away.William still worries about not getting paid.Some of the soldiers revolt about guard duty and 3 of them are relieved.

    There is still no pay.William bought new boots because he wore out the other pair that he had.The soldiers now have drill exercises twice a day.

    William was on guard duty last night at the camp.He was also invited to a social at the Episcopalian church in Racine.There is still no pay,but instead they charge the soldiers for what they want and take it out of their pay.William has been sick for two days with a headache. He also has gained a little weight.

    He went to the meeting at the church and then was put on patrol duty.When he got back to the camp the hospital needed two soldiers so he volunteered to go.9 of the soldiers in the hospital were sick with measles. One soldier was sick with rheumatism in his back and legs.

    On Monday the camp received a telegram from General Hollock asking them to cook up 3 days rations, apply to the nearest quartermaster for transportation,and to get down there as soon as possible.Trowbridge said that he had ordered cars from Chicago to take them to St.Louis.

    William mainly talks about having to cook his own food and the food that the soldiers have to eat. Some of the food that the soldiers had to eat are chicken,salt beef,beans, and coffee.

    The commissary said that if they don't leave soon they will never leave at all.The 2nd and 4th batteries left for Baltimore,while the 1st and 3rd batteries left for Louisville,Kentucky.William now has read "The Lady of the Lake."

    William now has to have guard duty at least once a week. He talks about how the soldiers divide up the work so one soldier will cook while another does laundry and so on. He is also excited about Bayard Taylor giving a lecture in town.

    William reads the Chicago Tribune newspaper that states that the town Henry was taken from the Southerners. He is hopeful that he will get to leave camp soon.4 more batteries are coming to the camp.There is also talk about the prospect of the soldiers forming a regiment.

    The idea of becoming a regiment seems to be a success. Captain Trowbridge has sent to Washington the request for guns, horses, and any other supplies the soldiers will need.The soldiers will be fully equiped in 3 weeks.The company now is divided into platoons which then do drills for an hour each day.

    William left Monroe at 8am and reached Janesville at 11 only to learn that he could not get to camp by any of the usual trains.He also learned that Batteries 5 and 6 had left camp and were headed south.He was afraid his battery had left him so he tried to make it to camp as fast as he could. He had to stay the night at the Benton House.When he finally got to camp he learned that the batteries were still there and that they had not been told to leave.

    The 3rd battery left the camp and William is still stuck at camp. There was an arrival of many captured southern soldiers. The camp also heard news that Nashville was being occupied by General Buell and 10,000 men.Also that the southerners were evacuating Columbus.

    William gets a new tent mate who came up there from Missouri. News comes in that the unionists down in Missouri are afraid for there lives.2 unionists were hung by secessionists because they did not declare allegiance with the rebels.The camp is also having to deal with very bad weather.

    There was a report that scarlet fever was in the camp. A private in the 10th battery died in the hospital yesterday. He had measles and very bad lung fever (tuberculosis). The regiment was presented a flag from the ladies of Monroe.

    The soldiers took a boat down to St.Louis,Missouri along with 15 southern prisoners.The prisoniers came form the skirmish of Blackwater that happened in December. The left for camp at 5 o'clock after getting off the boat. They have orders to go to New Madrid. They will leave in the morning at 6.

    On Board of Packet John S. Dickey
    Yesterday the soldiers left the Brenton Barracks and got on board of the the steamship only to find out that they wouldn't leave until today. They then started sailing down the Mississippi River. At midnight william woke up and found that they were at Cape Girardeau. The soldiers were then detained there for a little while to calm the citizens down. Soon they continue to sail down the river. At 1 o'clock the boat stops at commerce.

    The soldiers landed at Cario at daylight yesturday.They then took trains to Ogden.From Ogden they had to walk 20 miles. It took then two days, but they finally made it to New Madrid.
