    This allowed Missouri to be a slave state, but to keep the balance in congress, Maine had to become a slave state. It also set the line of 36 30 degrees N latitude. The states north of this line wouls be free, and the ones south of the line would be slave.

    This said that slavery should be banned in any land that mexico might take over. This act did not pass.

    Bleeding Kansas
    It was left to the state of Kansas to decide wether or not they would be a free state. People moved to and from Kansas to influense the voting, and eventualy a little war broke out. The state became free.

    A slave Dread Scott sued his owner for keeping him as a slave outside of slave territory. He lost because slaves were not considered citizens, and people who were not citizens can't sue. He was eventualy freed.

    Both men battled in a series of debates in Illinois for a spot in the senate. The main topic was slavery. Lincolin said it was up to congress to decide if the states should be free or slave, but Douglass said it was up to the states.
