What Does Reading Workshop Look Like?

  • Policy Day

    Policy Day
    Students will act as policy-makers and decide on physical dimensions of the room. This includes the classroom library, group area, work area, supply area, etc. (physical arrangment of room). In groups of about 4, students will use props like a gavel, old-fashioned wigs, coke-bottle glasses, and "aged-parchment" to gather their ideas and opinions. They will then share their thoughts by participating in sharing circle.

    Students will be introduced to the structure of Reading Workshop. This day will involve a lot of teacher modeling for procedures like listening quietly and how to transition with certain music. This discussion will center around expectations. They will then share their thoughts by participating in sharing circle.

    Students will continue to discuss the structure of Reading Workshop. This day will involve a lot of teacher modeling, paired with more student engagement. They will review procedures from the previous day, as well as discuss how to work in groups and what good discussion looks like. They will then share their thoughts by participating in sharing circle.
  • Book Day

    Book Day
    Students will continue to review procedures for Reading Workshop. Teacher will model how to choose the right book "for me, myself and I." Students will actively participate, then take part in independent practice. They will then share their thoughts by participating in sharing circle.
  • Book Day

    Students will continue to review procedures for Reading Workshop. Teacher will model good independent reading behavior, such as not disturbing others and "getting lost." Students will have the opportunity to practice this behavior. They will then share their thoughts by participating in sharing circle.
  • Trial Day

    Trial Day
    Students will participate in a "trial run" of the Reading Workshop procedures, including listening during the read-aloud, transitioning to centers with music, choosing books, reading independently, and participating in group discussion/sharing.
  • Community Day

    Community Day
    Today will be used to generate a sense of community among the students through a game of kickball or any other game that is team-oriented. This will foster the social aspect of the classroom environment.
