  • James Monroe Inauguration

    James Monroe Inauguration
    James Monroe is inaugurated as the 5th president of the United States of America. Monroe defeated Rufus King in a landslide victory, thus ending the Federalist party.
  • Treaty of 1818

    Under new president James Monroe, Britain and America agreed to sign a treaty which establishes the boundaries between US and Canada at the 49th parallel.
  • Adams-Onis Treaty

    The Adams-Onis treaty ceded Florida to be part of the United States. This treaty was signed by John Quincy Adams and Luis de Onís, the Spanish minister.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Missouri Compromise
    Congress passed a bill granting Missouri to be a slave state. Slavery was prohibited in the rest of the Louisiana purchase, as long as it is north of the 39th parallel.     Just two days after the Missouri Compromise, James Monroe accepted his second term, as he was sworn into office.

    In this election there was no clear winner, so the election went to the house. Henry Clay used his position to influence a John Quincy Adams victory. Clay was later named Secretary of State.   • Election of 1828

    Election of 1828
    This election featured a rematch between incumbent John Quincy Adams. This election was the overall birth of Democrat Party.
  • Mexico's Ban on US immigrants to Texas

    This is also known as the Law of April 6th. It bans further immigration from the US to Texas. Victoria Guadeloupe declines Americas proposal to buy Mexican Texas.
  • Andrew Jackson re-election

    Andrew Jackson defeated Henry Clay to re-enter office.
  • The Battle of the Alamo

    This battle was a pivotal event in the Texas revolution. After almost 13 days under siege, Mexican troops launched an assault on the Alamo mission killing all of the Texian defenders. The Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, ending the revolution.

    The decisive battle in the Texas Revolution. Ultimately won by the Texans led by Sam Houston.

    Martin Van Buren defeats multiple Whig candidates, led by William Henry Harrison, the Democratic party further grows with this victory.

    Aroostook War

    The Aroostook War was a military and civilian involved confrontation between the United States and the United Kingdom over the international boundary between the British colony of New Brunswick and the US state of Maine. There was never a war, militia units never engaged in combat.
  • Election of 1840

    Martin Van Buren fought for re-election against a unified Whig party during an economic depression. The war hero William Henry Harrison won presidency with a slogan of "Tippecanoe and Tyler too."
  • The Death of William Henry Harrison

    The Death of William Henry Harrison
    Shortly after being elected as the 9th president of the United States, Harrison died of a terrible case of pneumonia. His vice president John Tyler is sworn into office.
  • Webster-Ashburton Treaty

    Webster-Ashburton Treaty
    This treaty was signed to resolve several border issues between US and British North American colonies (i.e. present day Canada) In this treaty the British acquired Quebec and Halifax.
  • James Polk Inauguration

    The United States presidential election of 1844 saw Democrat James Knox Polk defeat Whig Henry Clay in a close contest that came down to foreign policy, with Polk favoring the annexation of Texas and Clay opposed.

    Mexican War

    The Mexican war was an armed conflict between the US and Mexico. It followed in the wake of the 1845 American annexation of the independent Republic of Texas, which Mexico still considered its northeastern province and a part of its territory after its de facto secession in the 1836 Texas Revolution 10 years earlier.

    The treaty was signed between Britain and US. It settled competing claims for the Oregon County.

    Congressman David Wilmot introduced the proviso in the United States House of Representatives. The bill intended for the final negotiations to resolve the Mexican–American War

  • Zachary Taylor Inauguration

    Zachary Taylor of the Whig Party, ran against Lewis Cass of the Democratic Party and former President Martin Van Buren.
  • Compromise of 1850

    Senator Henry Clay introduced a series of resolutions, in an attempt to seek a compromise and avert a crisis between North and South. The Fugitive Slave Act was amended and the slave trade in Washington, D.C., was abolished.
  • Millard Fillmore Inauguration

    Fillmore was sworn in after the day after the death of Zachary Taylor.
  • Franklin Pierce Inauguration

    Once again, the incumbent president was a Whig who had succeeded to the presidency after the death of his war-hero predecessor. It was Millard Fillmore who followed General Zachary Taylor. The Whig party passed over the incumbent for nomination, casting aside Fillmore in favor of General Winfield Scott. The Democrats nominated a “dark horse” candidate, this time Franklin Pierce.

    The Gadsden Purchase was a treaty signed by James Gadsden that gave US territorial rights to present day New Mexico and Arizona.
