  • Proclamation of 1763

    Proclamation of 1763
    The Proclamation of 1763 was made to keep the colonists closer to the coast and England. This would make it easier to collect taxes. This made the colonists realize that there were many things that they didn't like that England did that were left unspoken. They didn't like their way of warfare, the taxes or quartering troops. Finally with the Proclamation in place the colonists expanded without England’s approval.
  • Northwest Territory

    Northwest Territory
    The US sold land in the west in hopes of getting out of the debt from the war and bad economic times. They broke land up into lots and sold it. In this new area they established schools like the Puritans did but they weren't religious. The schools were made to inform people about the new republic.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    Louisiana Purchase
    The Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the US. Also it finally got the French to leave us alone. Lastly it gave us access to the Mississippi and ports for trading purposes.
  • Red River Basin

    Red River Basin
    The US gained the Red River Basin when we signed the Convention of 1818. The Convention of 1818 was signed in order to resolve some issues that werent covered between America and British in the Treaty Ghent. The Red Basin is the land that America acquired when we spilt the Oregon Terrioty with the Britain
  • West & East Florida

    West & East Florida
    There were a lot of problems with people coming in through Florida and attacking towns and slaves escaping to Florida. The US entered Florida to fix problems. However General Jackson overstepped his authority and pushed Indians back. Since neither Spain nor the US wanted war, the Adam-Onís Treaty was signed.The treaty stated that the US would pay $5 million for Florida and forfeited any claims to Texas.
  • Webster-Ashburton Treaty

    Webster-Ashburton Treaty
    An agreement made between the US and Britain defining the boundary between British and American territory from Maine to present-day Minnesota. The Aroostook Valley was given to the US and several waterways were opened to free navigation. This treaty settled the unclear US-Canadian border in the Great Lakes Region. Lastly it provided for suppression of slave trade and for mutual extradition of criminals. This treaty made peace with the 2 countries and gave the US valuable land for trading.
  • Texas Annexation

    Texas Annexation
    Texas wasn't happy with the Mexican governmen. Texas didn't want to be a part of Mexico any longer. Texas asked to become a part of the US. Mexico said that if the US takes Texas then they'd declare war. The US took Texas and war was started.
  • Oregon Territory

    Oregon Territory
    This territory was shared by US and England. There were more Americans than British in the area. Negotiations began to split the area. Despite England’s desire to receive more than half of the land, the land was evenly split to avoid war between the two countries.
  • Mexican Cessation

    Mexican Cessation
    Another dispute over land between the Americans and Mexicans led to war. A year later the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo was signed. The treaty recognized Texas as a U.S. state, and ceded a large chunk of land to the US for the cost of $15 million. The treaty also stated that Mexicans who remained in the state would be permitted to become US citizens, and that they would be allowed to keep their property. This part of the treaty was broken a decade later when the US took 20 million acres of Mexican
  • Gadsden Purchase

    Gadsden Purchase
    This conflict started when America wanted to make a rail line through the Gila River which
    was area being fought over by the US and Mexico. The Mexican government was in desperate need of money, and it agreed to sell a small strip of land along the US-Mexico border for 10 million dollars.
  • Alaska

    Alaska
    Alaska was originally Russia’s and Russia didn't want to give it away. Since Russia was in a bad time and didn't want to have to fight the British, who were looking to take over Alaska, the Russians sold it to the US. They would rather give land to an ally than an enemy. Russia sold the land to the US for 7.2 million dollars. Americans weren't too thrilled about the purchase until a few years later when gold was discovered
  • Hawaii

    Hawaii
    The US had no interest in aquiring Hawaii, until American sugar plantation owners increasingly dominated the Hawaiian economy. Wealthy planters wanted Hawaii to become part of the US, so they could sell sugar to Americans tariff free. Queen Liliuokalani, Hawaii's leader, saw the power that American government had over her people, so she tried to make a stronger monarchy government. American planters fought back and Hawaii became an independent state. Later Hawaii became part of the US.
