    From about 1811-1840 the Oregon Trail was laid down by traders and fur trappers. It could only be traveled by horseback or on foot.

    In 1836, the first of the migrant train of wagons was put together.

    The Mexican Cession was due to the war with Mexico ending in Mexico surrendering the territories know today as California, Nevada, Utah, and Arizona.
  • Chinese Arrive

    After the word of gold in California in 1851 the Chinese gold seekers arrived in California in great numbers. Soon, they took up about a fifth of the entire population in mining areas.
  • Chinese Discrimination

    By the 1870's, the Chinese faced discrimination and outright violence because the Americans claimed the gold was there right to mine.
