German Revolution of 1918 and Kaiser Wilhelm II resigns
This picture was chosen because it’s a Newspaper depicting the abdication of the Kaiser. The headlines in the largest and bold font represent the large, political magnitude of moment. The news paper also portrays different political parties and movements like women suffrage, embodying this power vacuum concept. -
Ebert-Groner Pact
This picture was chosen to demonstrate the Ebert-Groner Pact as the picture is of of Friedrich Ebert, the German actor in the pact. -

This picture of newspaper announcing the end of WW1 was used as it demonstrates the signing of the Armistice to end WW1. -

This picture of the Flag of Bavarian Soviet Republic is was used to demonstrate the creation of the Bavarian Soviet Republic as it was used by the Republic to represent itself. -
Sparticist Revolt
Propaganda poster from KPD about Spartacists is used to demonstrate the Spartacist revolt as it demonstrates the popular anti-Spartacist reaction seen after the revolt. -
Treaty of Versailles and the results for Germany
This photo was chosen as it's a map showing how much land Germany lost from the treaty, a significant part of why it was hated by the German people. -
Formation of Weimar Republic/ Constitution
Meeting which drafted the Weimar constitution is used to demonstrate the Weimar Republic as it was the act which formed the basis of Weimar. -
Kapp Putsch
This photo was chosen as it is a photo of Wolfgang Kapp, the man which the Putsch was named after. -
(Red) Ruhr Uprising
The photo was chosen as the Ruhr Uprising was a far-left movement. -
Rapallo Treaty
The photo was chosen as it is a photo of the German Chancellor meeting with the Russian delegation to discuss the terms of the treaty. -
Occupation of the Ruhr by France and Belgium
The photo was chosen as it shows a French armored car during the invasion of the Ruhr, specifically in the city of Essen. -
Hyperinflation Crisis
The photo was chosen as it shows children playing with money as if it were blocks, showing how useless money was. -
Grand Coalition of Weimar Germany
The propaganda poster says: "under these colors for unity and freedom. Vote: Social Democrats or Democrats or Center." They are completely disregarding the politically right and the extreme left, they are only advocating votes for those who are in the Grand Coalition. Essentially, any left-wing non-extremist is better than extremist groups or right-wing parties. -
Beer Hall Putsch
The reason why I chose this image is because it shows Hitler surrounded by members of the NSDAP which represents Hitler as one of main perpetrator of the Beer Hall Putsch uprising, also the well-oriented and almost military uniformed look of the members of the NSDAP could almost be mistaken for as the actually military. Which they had connection with and had similarly aligned ideology, with shows how the military didn't want to intervene in the uprising and later Hitler overthrow, to alignment. -
Rentenmark
I chose this image because it shows how hyperinflation caused the German mark to become almost worthless. Germany began printing large amounts of money to pay workers. As prices kept rising, the government continued printing more money, which only worsened inflation. Eventually, the value of the mark dropped so drastically that people needed billions or even trillions just to buy basic items. This image clearly illustrates the extreme devaluation of the currency with the money in the billions. -
Weimar golden age
I chose Gustav Stresemann to represent the Weimar Golden Age because he played a key role in stabilizing Germany after the crisis of hyperinflation. He helped restore confidence in the economy, and ending passive resistance in the Ruhr. With his plans which lead people to rebuild and buy stuff which cause period of relative stability and prosperity to Germany during the mid-1920s, which is why he symbolizes the success of the Weimar Golden Age. -
Dawes Plan
I chose this image to represent the Dawes Plan because it clearly shows the cycle of how the plan worked and why it was successful. Germany received loans from the United States, which it used to pay reparations to Britain and France. In turn, Britain and France used that money to repay their own debts to the U.S. This created a loop that helped stabilize the German economy and improved international relations during the Weimar Golden Age. -
first election of Hindenburg
I chose this image because it shows how public support for the Weimar Republic changed over time. Though Hindenburg was elected in 1925 as a conservative, support for pro-Weimar parties grew from 52% in 1924 to 73% in 1928. This shows some stability under Stresemann’s leadership. However, the image also hints at the Republic’s weakness, as support drops to just 34% by 1933. This helps explain why Hindenburg’s election was both a sign of stability and a warning of future collapse. -
locarno pact
I chose this political cartoon to represent the Locarno Pact because it highlights the ambitious goal of achieving lasting peace in Europe after centuries of conflict. The cartoon shows European countries standing on a mountain labeled a thousand years of bloodshed, symbolizing the long and violent history they are trying to overcome. In the distance, Peace is shown far away, emphasizing how difficult and uncertain the path to peace still is. -
Treaty of Berlin with Soviet Union
This picture was chosen because it shows Two significant leaders, Stalin and Stresemann, side-by-side, which is symbolic of comradery and empowerment. They seem pretty happy about the treaty; they view the Berlin Treaty in a positive light. -
German entrance into League of Nations
This picture was chosen because we see Stresemann in the stands during a league of nations meeting with the world basically watching him: a pivotal moment that emphasizes the importance of Germany's international public image with foreign relations while underscoring Stresemann's leadership as a representative of Germany. -
Beginning of Great Depression
This picture was chosen because although not a direct photo of Weimar, the Wall Street crash greatly affected Weimar and their economics, sending them into a great depression as they relied on American Foreign loans. What this photo represents is misery; these people are lining up for charitable food, they cannot afford anything which is highly representative of other countries that rely on American trade and loans - especially Weimar. -
Young Plan
This picture was chosen because although the Young Plan was overall good, the political cartoon says "58 years of the young plan" with a decaying slave behind the 'master' which are the allies. Though economically strengthening, there was still some political unrest within many political groups, especially those in the far/extreme-right and left. -
Von Papen’s deal with Hitler
The picture was chosen because it shows anti-Bolshevik propaganda poster talks about how Von Papen made the correct choice, that Hitler was the solution to communism. The overall support shows how Hitler is seen as this idol for the far-right, which contributed to the miscalculation of conservative elitist. -
Hitler becomes Chancellor
The photo was chosen because it shows Hindenburg and Von Papen holding Hitler up like a victor, almost like he is being held on at a higher regard than both leaders. Its clear that hitler is controlling them. Once Hitler became chancellor, Von Papen and Hindenburg were the people who seemed more supportive rather than actually controlling Hitler like a puppet. It symbolizes this foolishness and ignorance from the leaders for choosing Hitler.
