    • WCTU fount for prohibition the banning of alcoholic beverages , wanted immigrants and poor city dwellers to uplift themselves -Franco Willard helps transform the union from a small mind -western religious group to a national organization aroused tension between immigrants b/c their customs include alcohol consumption
  • James Garfield

    -term was less than 4 months then died.
    -who killed him: Charles Guiteau killed him b|c he belived Garfield ownd him a patrong position in the diplomatic crops
    -Result: Charles was convicted of murder & hanged on June 30 , 1882 congress passed the Pendleton Act
  • Pendleton Act

    -cause=president garfield was shot two by Charles Guiteau when turned a job down ,Cheseter Arthur became president
    -Effect=officials could no longer pressure employed for campaign contributors patronage system is a practice in which a political party after winning an election gives Gov jobs to its supporters

    -this law required to label any addictive durg including alcohol , morphine , opium , cannabis
    -this law required coca- cola to remove the cocaine and replace it with caffeine

    -as result of making the public aware of the filthy & dangerous conditions, each local gov. passed its own set of health codes as well as the meat inspection act 7 the pure food & drug act

    -Purpose or org: to ensuer the political ,educational social, & economic equality of minority , group citizens of U.S and eliminate race prejudice
    -cause: to make whites aware of the need for racial equality
    -effect: first group in U.S formed by people of African descendants to work for there rigths.

    -its biggest effect was shift the balance of power toward the federal Gov and way from the states

    -Temperance = restraint+moderation from drinking
    - Prohibition = nationwide ban of alcohol
    -Speakeasy = illicit establishment that sells alcoholic beverages
    - Flapper=generation of young western in 1920 who wore shorts skirts , bobbed their hair ,listened to jazz and flaunted their unacceptable behavior

    • granted women the right to vote a right known as suffrage able to vote -help woman move closer to equality in all aspects of American life -women advocated for jobs, fair wages, education, Dec education and birth control
