Guda-homiliary of St. Bartholomew
Guda was an interesting artist to learn about from this time period because not only was she a nun with an incredible gift but also because along with her self-portrait she included these words "Guda, a sinner, wrote and painted this book". I think that was powerful because I appreciate when someone who is holy and living a life as a nun is able to describe themselves in a way and see themselves in a way that is so human and imperfect. -

This is an interesting piece from the middle ages that I am choosing to discuss because for some reason this painting really stood out to me. What's interesting is that it's done by an unknown artist. While I don't know if the artist is male or female, I do know that a female is being depicted in this painting. It depicts a female artist working on a sculpture. Because it's unknown, I'm curious to know more about the story behind it. Is the woman in the painting a real person?
