    The main character in the book, Cadence Sinclair Eastman, introduces herself. She lives in Burlington, Vermont with her Mummy and three dogs and she´s almost 18 years old. She tells us how she has changed, for instance: " I used to be blond, but now my hair is black" or "I used to be strong, but now I am weak".

    Mirren, Gat and Johnny. The family calls them “The Liars”, and they have always been spending every minute, every summer on the island together. Gat started coming to the island summer eight, because he is Carries long time boyfriend’s nephew and not blood related to The Sinclairs. Mirren and Johnny are Cadences cousins. Cadence describes Mirren as: "sugar, curiosity and rain" and Johnny as: "bounce, effort and snark".

    Cadence and her mother arrive at Beechwood island, which the Sinclair family has owned for generations. All of Cadence’s family on her mother’s side are there to welcome them, after a rough start to the summer with Cadence’s father leaving her and her mother. Cadence’s grandparents, Harris and Tipper, her two aunts, Carrie and Bess and their children.

    "Summer fifteen" is the summer when Cadence is 15 years old. Her father abandons her and her mother, with a woman that he loved more than Cadence and her mother. He told Cadence’s mother he wasn´t a Sinclair, and that he couldn’t try to be one any longer.  Cadence was devastated and she looked for an escape. This caused her to make some thoughtless decisions that she regrets later, such as trashing all the gifts he had given them.

    Cadence realizes she has feelings for Gat. She notices that Gat has picked her favourite flower, beach rose, and assumes it’s for her. She saw Gat with the rose in his hand, and realized she loved him. Then he put the rose in an envelope and wrote a name on it. Cadence then realized that Gat had a girlfriend at home in New York.
  • It is mentioned that Granny Tipper dies

    It is mentioned that Granny Tipper dies
    She died of heart failure eight months before “summer fifteen”. Cadence says she was a stunning woman, even when she was old.
  • Cadence's Accident

    Cadence's Accident
    Cadence is found by her mother alone on the beach with no clothes on, curled into a ball and her body half underwater. Cadence is shivering, because she has been in the cold water for a while. She can’t remember why she got into the water alone or what happened.
  • Cadence Is Sick

    Cadence Is Sick
    Cadence tells us how her head is functioning, how her pains are and how weak she is after her accident. The pain started about six weeks after the accident. She now has migraines caused by traumatic brain injury.

    Cadence goes to Europe with her dad, instead of going to Beechwood “summer sixteen”. In Europe she vomited a lot, even in different museums and she didn´t feel good at all. She took lots of medicines and she really missed “the Liars” that summer, especially because they never kept in touch during the schoolyear.
  • "Summer Seventeen"

    "Summer Seventeen"
    “Mummy” and Cadence arrive at the island, for the first time after her accident. Aunt Carrie is standing on the dock and greeting them. Carrie says it’s wonderful to see them again, and says “I know you´ve been sick” to Cadence. Cadence replies “Nothing wrong with me that a Percocet and a couple slugs of vodka doesn´t cure”. Carrie laughs, but Cadence’s mother is not impressed.
  • Meeting Gat Again

    Meeting Gat Again
    Gat calls Cadence’s name as she is heading up the walkway to New Clairmont. She turns around and sees Gat running at her, wearing blue pyjama pants and no shirt. They walk together to the tiny beach, when suddenly Gat turns around and wraps his arms around her, pull her to his chest and buries his face in her neck. Then he whispered “I didn´t get to hug you yesterday”.
  • At the Tennis Court

    At the Tennis Court
    Johnny, Mirren, Gat and Cadence all played tennis. Johnny and Cadence win, but Cadence mentions that they won only because Johnny is an excellent athlete. Gat asks how Europe was as they walk from the tennis court, and Cadence answers “My father ate squid ink”.
  • Granddad and Cadence after a boat trip

    Granddad and Cadence after a boat trip
    Cadence’s granddad docks the boat and ties it up. Cadence asked him if he still misses Granny. He replied: “Because I miss her, we never talk about her. A part of me died, and it was the best part”.
  • Cliff Jumping

    “The Liars” paddle their kayaks around the bay side under Windmere to an inlet. They pull their kayaks onto the rocks and climb to where its dry and cool. Gat and Johnny began climbing the rocks to a high point over the water, and Cadence follows. Johnny holds his nose and plummets into the water, Gat as well. Mirren tells Cadence not to jump, but Cadence didn´t listen and jumped into the deep water.
  • Gat Leaving

    Gat Leaving
    After the aunties and Granddad had quarrelled, Cadence was crying and Gat was crying because it was time for Gat to leave the island. Cadence had never cried with anyone before, but they were never going to see each other again.
  • The Dogs

    The Dogs
    Cadence realizes that the two dogs Fatima and Prince Philip died in the fire in Clairmont. The fire was her accident, and she now remembers what happened.
  • The Fire

    The Fire
    Cadence realizes that “The Liars” set fire to Clairmont to stop the quarrelling in the family. Only Cadence got out of the fire alive, Gat, Mirren and Johnny didn’t make it out of the house in time. Her three best friends were dead and she couldn´t save them in the fire. They died inside Clairmont, and she felt that it was all her fault.
