Visual Literacy PD timeline

  • Pre-test (15 minutes)

    Teachers will take the pre-test.
  • Identify (15 minutes)

    Identify (15 minutes)
    Teachers will come up with one word for the subject of each photo and write that word into a google form. Those words will then be taken and used to create a word cloud for each photo that will serve as a visual representation of their understanding of the photos.
  • Examine (30 minutes)

    Examine (30 minutes)
    Teachers will examine two photos and try to decide which one would relate to the first two photos. Then, captions will be read to the teachers as they examine each photo. Teachers will then discuss how the three photos help to create a better interpretation of the subject they represent.
  • Recognize (40 minutes)

    Recognize (40 minutes)
    Teachers will create three questions they have about the events represented in each photo and research to answer those three questions. They will also begin reflecting on how they might use some of the resources used in their classroom instruction.
  • Reflection (15 minutes)

    Reflection (15 minutes)
    Teacher will discuss with their partners how they could use visual images in their instruction. Teachers will share ideas with the whole group.
  • Post-test (15 minutes)

    Teachers will take the post-test and evaluate what they have learned as well as the workshop itself.
  • Observe (30 minutes)

    Teachers will look closely at three separate photos adding to a chart for each photo: people, objects, and activities (20 minutes)
    and discuss as a whole group the things they notice about the photos.
  • Read (20 minutes)

    Read (20 minutes)
    Teachers will look at the same three photos. This time teachers will read the captions that go with the first two photos and answer the following question with a partner about each photo: What about each photo are you able to better understand after reading the captions. Be specific for each photo. How would captions help you to better understand the third photo? After discussing in pairs, teachers will then discuss as a whole group.
