Gulf of Tonkin Incident
North Vietnamese patrol boats attack the American destroyer USS Maddox, and are subsequently either destroyed or scared off. following this and the false incident two nights later, the Gulf of Tonkin resolution is power; The War in Vietnam escalates. -
Operation: Rolling Thunder
A series of missions from 1965 to 1968, Rolling Thunder was intended to seriously hamper or even completely cut off the flow of supplies from North Vietnam to troops in the south. Eventually, many military and industrial targets were attacked and subsequently destroyed. -
Nixon Inaugurated as President
Following a failed presidential campaign in 1960, Nixon runs as the Republican choice in 1968, and wins. He subsequently begins the gradual withdrawal of troops from Vietnam. -
Tet Offensive
The North Vietnamese launch a series of attacks all over South Vietnam, mainly attacking cities like Hue and Saigon, but also military bases such as Khe Sahn. The attacks are repulsed and eliminate much of the NVA manpower, but its political death for the war. -
My Lai Massacre
Lt. Calley and his company enter the village of My Lai. Expecting the Viet Cong instead of civilians, they massacre them, all men, women, and children. -
Vietnam Draft
The Vietnam draft is first called on December 1st, 1969. Six draft lotteries were subsequently called for more troops. -
Kent State
Demonstrators at the Kent State University protest both the war and the guard being present on campus. After many of the guardsmen are trapped, protestors advance on them and pose a threat. The guard fires, killing four and wounding others. -
Paris Peace Accords Signed
The Paris Peace Accords, or the "Agreement on Ending the War and Restoring Peace in Vietnam," is signed by the United States, South Vietnam, North Vietnam, and the Viet Cong. The peace treaty was only temporary, and North Vietnam would later break their treaty. -
War Powers Act
The War Powers Act is passed by congress, repealing the Gulf of Tonkin resolution. The president no longer has direct control over the Vietnam theater. -
Fall of Saigon
Following the renewed war, North Vietnam invades their southern counterpart. Losing a desperate fight, the South Vietnamese surrender and the north creates one Vietnam, no longer north nor south.
