Domino Theory coined- Eisenhower - inlight of Vietnam
Eisenhower delivered a speech to the U.S. Governor's Conference in Seattle. In his speech he warned that if Vietnam fell to Communism, soon other
East Asian countries would also fall to Communism, he called this the "Domino Theory". -
Geneva Accords
The Geneva Accords, also referred to as the Geneva Agreements, stated that the French would withdraw their troops from North Vietnam. This also divided Vietnam at the 17th parallel. -
Assassination of Diem
Diem, the president of South Vietnam, was assassinated in a coup d'état that was led by General Minh. President Kennedy gave the "okay" for Diem to be assassinated. -
Gulf of Tonkin Resolution
This was authorized by U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson. In Johnson's speech to Congress he said, "take all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further aggression". When saying this he was referring to the aggression that the North Vietnamese were showing against the South Vietnamese and Americans. -
LBJ ordered 1st troops to Vietnam
President Lyndon B. Johnson announced to the U.S. that he was going to increase military presence in Vietnam. He was going to increase the troops from 75,000 to 125,000. He also told the U.S. that the draft would be reinstated if they needed more manpower. -
Tet Offensive
Attacks by about 85,000 troops under an order from the North Vietnamese government, Ho Chi Minh, a communist leader in North Vietnam. These attacks were carried out in major South Vietnamese cities, military bases, and villages. -
My Lai Massacre
A group of American soliders brutally killed many women, children, and old men in the village of My Lai. These civillians were unarmed and innocent. -
Nixon’s Vietnamization policy
A policy that the Nixon admistration came up with to end the U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War. This program was to "expand, eqiup, and train South Vietnamese forces and assign to them an ever increasing combat role" and reduce the number of U.S. combat troops at the same time. -
Nixon sends troops into Cambodia
Nixon announced his decision to launch U.S. soldiers into Cambodia to try to capture "the headquarters of the entire communist military operation in South Vietnam". -
Kent State shooting
The Kent State shooting was when Kent State University students were protesting the Vietnam War and Nixon's treatment of the war. The National Guard opened fire on the crowd when students started to throw things at them. Four Kent State University students were killed and nine were injured. -
Hard Hat Riot
Construction workers fought against Anti-War protesters. This was days after the Kent State Shooting. The Construction workers praised Nixon's decision to send troops into Cambodia and the anti-war protesters criticized Nixon. -
Nixon’s Christmas bombing
The U.S. bombed North Vietnam because they pulled out of peace talks. The bombing lasted for days, until the North Vietnamese agreed to resume peace talks. -
Paris Peace Accords
This was a document that the U.S., South Vietnam, Vietcong, and North Vietnam signed to end the Vietnam War and restore peace in Vietnam. -
War Powers Act
A congressional resolution that was created to limit the U.S. president's ability to start or increase military actions abroad. It limits the powers of the president when escalating war. -
Saigon Falls
The Fall of Saigon was the takeover of the city by the Vietcong. The U.S. was forced to leave it's embassy in the city and evacuate U.S. citizens and South Vietnamese people by helicopter.
