Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

Aug 10, 1964

A joint resolution is passed by Congress in response to the Gulf of Tonkin incident. It authorizes President Johnson to take any measures necessary to promote international peace.

Tet Offensive

Jan 30, 1968

During Tet, Vietcong troops attack almost every major metropolitan center in South Vietnam. The U.S. regain territory but lose morale.

My Lai Massacre

Mar 16, 1968

American soldiers kill several hundred unarmed Vietnamese women and children in the village of My Lai.

Cambodian Campaign

Apr 29, 1970

With the intention of disrupting North supply lines, President Nixon orders a series of military operations to temporarily invade neutral Cambodia. As a result, anti-war protests increase dramatically.

Kent State Massacre

May 4, 1970

Students protest the U.S. invasion of neutral Cambodia. Several soldiers of the Ohio National Guard fire and kill 4 students, injuring others.

Cease-fire

Jan 28, 1973

American troops withdraw from Vietnam after a cease-fire is reached.

Fall of Saigon

Apr 30, 1975

North Vietnam captures Saigon. Vietnam unites as one communist nation.
