    The United States Military Assistance Advisory Group was established in Saigon, Vietnam. The MAAG's purpose was to supervise $10 million of military equipment sent to support the French legionnaires to fight off the Viet Minh forces.

    Battle of Ap BAC
    The Battle of Ap BAC was the first major battle of the Vietnam war. The battle took place in a village in Ding Teuong, approximately 50 miles from the city Saigon. The battle resulted in many deaths among strong South Vietnamese troops. It was an example of weakness of the South Vietnamese forces compared to how strong Viet Cong was.

    Agent Orange was first begun used in the Vietnam war in 1962. It was used as a powerful mixture defoliant to elminate forest cover and crop to consume for North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces. This chemical caused long and short term health effects to Vietnamese and U.S. soldiers.

    Battle of Ia Drang Valley
    The Battle of Ia Drang was the first major battle between the regular U.S. troops and the People's Army of Vietnam. After the North Vietnamese failed to attack the special forces, they were instructed to move to Pleiku to destroy the enemy. Once they arrived, they were unable to identify where the enemy was located. Although there were many casualities on either side, both sides thought that they had claimed victory in a win.

    The North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces coordinated and surprisingly attacked South Vietnamese cities.
  • Final Departure

    Final Departure
    In the early morning, the last ten Marines from the embassy, departed from Saigon. By early afternoon, Viet Cong flags flew over the presidential palace. President Minh broadcasts a message of unconditional surrender.
