    Vietnam is divided into North and South. The North being communist and the South being anti-communist. This happened because the US bankrolled much of the failed French War effort and got allied with South Vietnam. This is important time period in American History because The US entered and began a part of the Vietnam problem.

    US holds back free elections in Vietnam.
    The US promised the US promised Vietnam to hold free elections to reunify the land. The US knowing that Ho Chi Ming would win, they never allowed it to happen. This is a significant part of the AMerican history because they didn't help Vietnam unify when it could because they did not want that president in office.

    Budhist calmly set themselves on fire as a political statement against South Vietnemeise government. This is significant because the majority were budhist and many arranged for themselves to be set on fire in public places. Americans did not stop it.

    The Gold of Tonkin Incident
    A U.S. destoryer patrol boat was out on the coast of North Vietnam. North Vietnam fired on the U.S. destroyer, then two nights later two U.S. ships went back to the coast. U.S. suspected North Vietnam possesed torpedoe misslies, but ended up being a false alarm. This is significant because President Johnson said we were attacked by North Vietnam and asked Congress to deply troops. He did not fully elaborate on his suspicion.

    Martin Luther King Jr. Speaks Out About the War
    Marthin Luther King Jr. speaks out about the war. He calls the U.S., "The greatest purveyor of violence in the world". He also encourages draft evasion and suggests merges between anti-war and civil rights groups. This is significant because it shows that iconic individuals also felt the need to advocate for non-violent means.

    Lyndon Johnson starts rerecampaining for elections but then drops out because of Tet Offensive. He knew he wasn't going to win. This is significant because it showed how the people weren't leaning to reelecting Johnson due to his ties to the Tet Offensive..

    Tet Offensive occurs to South Vietnam.
    A surprise attack was brought upon US and South Vietnam forces. North Vietcom guerrilas capture all of South Vietnam urban areas. This is significant to American history because Lydon Johnson administration said it was almost over and that the enemy was weak but this made it clear it was not.
