    Geneva Conference
    The Geneva Accords was designed to make agreements to settle the war, but eventually contributed to war. In the meeting it was agreed that there was going to be a division of Vietnam along the 17th parallel, creating the North and the South.

  • Advisory Effort

    Advisory Effort
    One demonstration of how unpopular America's South Vietnamese allies were was when Buddhist Monks were setting fire to themselves as a political statement against the South Vietnamese government and their policies. Their peaceful protest was because the Diem regime had a strong track recorded of persecuting Buddhist.

  • Bay of Pigs Invasion

    Bay of Pigs Invasion
    Kennedy wanted to come up with a plan to get ride of Castro. The plan was to train Cuban exiles as commandos, give them weapons and send them into Cuba as an invasion force. The hope was they could become a Gorilla army that other Cubans could join and gradually it could be a cocounter-revolution. This was a failed attempt because Castro knew they were coming.

  • Cuban Missile Crisis

    Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Soviet constructed a facilities with nuclear weapons in Cuba to detour the US from ever attacking the island. US surveillance aircrafts picked up on this construction. After a 13-day period the Soviet’s agreed to dismantle and get ride of their missile launching systems with the agreement that the US would not invade Cuba.

  • Gulf of Tonkin Incident

    Gulf of Tonkin Incident
    The Advisory Effort was not working and Johnson knew he needed to find an excuse to escalate the US military commitment. After a minor attack on US forces who were involved in supporting a attack on North Vietnamese territory Johnson asked congress to deploy more troops. He successfully gets the support, while leaving out details of the event.

  • Operation Rolling Thunder

    Operation Rolling Thunder
    The Operation Rolling Thunder bombing campaign began at this time in response to a Viet Cong attack on a U.S. air base at Pleiku. The Johnson administration named numerous motives for changing US strategies to incorporate methodical aerial assaults on North Vietnam.

    Vietnam War Protests
    One of the most prominent anti-war demonstrations occurred during this time. 100,000 protesters came together at the Lincoln Memorial and 30,000 continued to march to the Pentagon. 100 demonstrators were arrested after a confrontation with the soldiers and US Marshals protecting the building.

  • Tet Offensive

    Tet Offensive
    America’s enemies used the occasion of the Tet New Year to make a surprise attack against allied forces. North Vietnam military and Vietcong Gorillas captured just about all of South Vietnam’s urban areas. The US forces and the South Vietnam’s allies counterattacked and took back the areas. The Tet Offensive ultimately became a victory for the US, but it meant the war was far from over.

    The Rockefeller Report
    Governor Nelson Rockefeller of New York, a Republican presidential candidate revealed a “The Rockefeller Report” which was a four-stage peace plan that he thought could end the war in six months North Vietnam agreed to it.

    Election of 1968
    With the division in the Democratic side because of the Vietnam War Hubert Humphrey does not receive a enough votes. Along with the division George Wallace represents himself as a segregationist because of he was dissatisfied about the Civil Rights. Richard Nixon took the election as a Republican.This was one of the more significant elections of the modern history of the US.

    Pentagon Papers
    The Pentagon Papers were published to the New York Times. The papers included the US military’s version of certain activities during the Vietnam War. By doing this the support for the Vietnam War was considerably decreased.

  • Watergate Scandal

    Watergate Scandal
    While Nixon was running for a second term there was a break in at the Watergate Apartment by members of the Democratic Party. It was a campaign of Nixon’s White House staff to secure unfair political advantages over opponents. It took two years, but he resigned after it was noted that he covered the tracks of this single greatest political scandal.

  • Paris Peace Accord Signed

    Paris Peace Accord Signed
    The cease-fire agreement is signed in Paris by the US, South Vietnam, Viet Cong, and North Vietnam to end the war and restore peace. The end of the draft is publicized and all the remaining US troops are withdrawn from Vietnam.

  • South Vietnam Surrenders

    South Vietnam Surrenders
    The South Vietnamese collapsed because of the North Vietnamese launched a major attack trying to overrun the provincial capital at Phuoc Binh. The South Vietnamese forces held out against the attackers until they ran out of tactical air supports and weapons. When North Vietnam attacked they received little resistance and the war came to an end.
