  • Dien Bien Phu

    It was a battle between the Vietnamese and the French that lasted 55 days. It killed 3000 French troops and wounded 8000 of them. The Vietnamese won.
  • Creation of the the Ho Chi Minh Trail

    This creation didn't have a specific date, but most of the year of 1959. It is a supply route that would go to the Vietcong forces in South Vietnam from North Vitetnam.
  • US becomes actively involved

    This date is when the American helicopters arrive to South Vietnam. Kennedy had also ordered more help for South Vietnam against the Vietkong guerrillas in late 1961.

    This was a major attack that was coming against the US Marine Base at Chu Lai. The US was victorious, winning the battle.
  • Operation Junction City

    30,000 troops are part of this mission, and also 5,000 men from the South Vietnam Army. The mission lasted 72 days, with Americans winning.
  • Khe Sanh attacked by Vietkong

    At 5:30 AM, mortars and rockets slam into the US Marine base at Khe Sanh, killing 18 Marines and wounding 40. The attack lasts for two more days.
  • Tet Offensive begins

    On this day, also the first day of the Lunar New Year (Vietnam's most important holiday), several surprise attacks by the Vietcong and North Vietnam were made on 5 cities, around 50 hamlets, and several towns throughout South Vietnam.

    In the My Lai hamlet, the US Charlie Company kills about 200 civilians. One member of the division is tried and found guilty of war crimes, the aftermath of the atrocious act is sensed within the Army.
