    The destroyer Maddox was torpedoed by North Vietnamese forces. This enacted the first stages of US involvement in the war, and is still subject to conspiracy today.

    Operation Rolling Thunder

    A continuous bombing of North Vietnam by Allied forces. It was meant to wear the North down, and ultimately beat them into submission.
  • Tet Offensive

    The Tet Offensive took place during the celebrations of Tet, the equivalent of 4th of July. It came as a shock to both the South Vietnamese and the United States public and forces. People had previously been lead to believe that Communists could not launch a strike of such a scale. Even more shocking was that the attack came at midnight during a 7 day peace between the north and south for the Tet holiday.     One of the bloodiest and costly battles of the war, Hue was a city taken by the Communists during the Tet Offencive. It was one of the most decisive victories for Allied forces in the war.

    One of the first major engagements between US and Northern forces. Both sides took heavy casualties, and both took credit for victory.

    Was a secret bombing campaign that was focused on crushing the North Vietnamese hiding in Laos and Cambodia. It was an attempt to break the heart of the Vietnamese army and destroy their safe havens.

    Hamburger Hill

    Hill 937, latter known as ‘hamburger hill’ was a heavily fortified Northern fortress. Although US intel knew this they still ordered a frontal assault that lost the lives of many many men. Due to this, public outcry in the states grew enormously.

    Nixon takes over in the war and implements a new campaign. He called it Vietnamization. This was the gradual withdrawal and handing over the war to the south vietnamese.

    This campaign was intended to strike at North Vietnamese forces hiding in Cambodia. It was mostly successful, but due to political issues had to be shut down. Many consider this the reason the Allies lost the war.

    Several rioting students shot dead by national guard members ordered not to fire. This fed to the fire of the unpopularity of the Vietnam war to the American Public and made them question their government.
  • Pentagon Papers

    Papers were leaked that held information on how many US government officials privately were against the war. This caused public outcry and made the war even more unpopular.
  • 26th Amendment

    This bushed the voting age from 21 to 18 to allow the younger people of the US to vote on matters that they found important to the country. Was created under public pressure.

    When Nixon enacted his plan of vietnamization, he pulled all US troops out of Vietnam(in 2 years) and left ARVN forces to fight by themselves without funding or aid promised by the US.
  • Paris Peace Talkes

    US, South Vietnam, and North Vietnam met in paris to discuss a cease fire and a possible end to the war. This, however, did not stop the defeat of ARVN forces by the north.
  • War Powers Act

    Allows the US president full power to declare war and make wartime decisions without the approval of congress. It was eventually overruled and taken out of practice due to Vietnam itself.

    US troops, after peace talks in paris, were ordered to start withdrawing from vietnam so the south could fight. This, however, did not help the outcome of the war.
  • South Vietnamese Surrender-

    Early in the morning hours, North Vietnamese forces moved into the Southern capital of Saigon. They faces light, sporadic resistance and crashed through the presidential gates, with tanks, in only a few hours. The South vietnamese president fled and gave control to his next in command. The second in command was left unhurt and was free to go.
