  • Division of VIetnam

    France is divided into three regions: Tonkin, Annam, and Cochin China. French also used water management to open new agricultural land in Mekong Delta.
  • Tonkin Campaign

    Lasted until April 1886, and was an armed conflict between Vietnamese forces and French forces. This ended with the French forces feeling as though they 'pacified' the situation, and reduced their forces to a small occupation division.
  • French move back into Tonkin

    French came back full intentions of taking total control and declaring Vietnam a protectorate of the Empire of Annam,. Still wanted foreign policy and protection under French control,
  • Creation of French Indochina

    Union under the French Colonials was formed. Happened after major ports were ceded.
  • Chinese End Support for Vietnamese exile

    Chinese were losing the Sino-Japanese war to the Japanese, and did not want to antagonize other nations so they dropped support for the Vietnamese exile for fear of antagonizing the French.
  • Dong Du Movement, aka 'Go East' Movement

    A movement led by Phan Boi Chau. The goal of the movement was to educate Vietnamese in the way of modern skills by sending students to Japan in hopes of being able to lead a successful armed revolt against the French. Failed when the Japanese turned him in to France.
  • Chinese/Mandarin language banned

    In an effort t lessen the power of mandarins at the village and state level of government, Chinese language examinations for selection and promotion were abolished.
  • Founding of Vietnam Quoc Dan Dang

    The VIetnamese nationalist party is formed. Modeled after Chinese Kuomintang.
  • Yen Bai mutiny

    Yen Bai mutiny in Tonkin resulted in its chairman, Nguyễn Thái Học and many other leaders captured and executed by the guillotine.
