    France and the United States did not take their declaration for independence seriously. In response they launched an attack against France in Hanoi.

    The idea behind the Domino Theory was that neighboring countries to communist nations will become communist. The thought was that all of Indochina would become communist.

    The Dien Dinh Phu was a significant battle for Indochina. The Vietnamese were fighting for independence while the French were fighting to keep their colonies. The Vietnamese won this battle against the French.

    The Geneva Accords split Vietnam at the 17th parallel. They were to have an election to see if they would come back together but it was cancelled by Ngo Dinh Diem.

    He canceled the elections because he knew he would lose. They were voting on if Vietnam should become one nation.

    They were known as the Viet Cong. They occupied North Vietnam.

    This man was Buddhist and set himself on fire in protest. He did this to show that if you weren't Christian you were better off dead in South Vietnam

    The United States gave support to Ngo Dingh Diem until he started to kill everyone that disagreed with him. After this he was assassinated.

    JFK was assassinated November 22nd, 1963. This left Lyndon B. Johnson for the presidency. Johnson pushed further into Vietnam while JFK wanted to leave and let them fight alone.

    President Johnson claims that the USS Maddox was shot at by Vietnamese. The response was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which gave Johnson almost full control of starting a war.
