Vietnam declares independence from France, but neither France nor the United States recognize Vietnam as a separate nation.
France and the United States did not take their declaration for independence seriously. In response they launched an attack against France in Hanoi. -
President Eisenhower declares "Domino Theory"
The idea behind the Domino Theory was that neighboring countries to communist nations will become communist. The thought was that all of Indochina would become communist. -
The Viet Minh and Ho Chi Minh defeat the French at Dien Bien Phu
The Dien Dinh Phu was a significant battle for Indochina. The Vietnamese were fighting for independence while the French were fighting to keep their colonies. The Vietnamese won this battle against the French. -
The Geneva Accords cause Vietnam to split into North and South.
The Geneva Accords split Vietnam at the 17th parallel. They were to have an election to see if they would come back together but it was cancelled by Ngo Dinh Diem. -
Ngo Dinh DIem cancels elections in Vietnam
He canceled the elections because he knew he would lose. They were voting on if Vietnam should become one nation. -
The National Liberation Front is formed
They were known as the Viet Cong. They occupied North Vietnam. -
A South Vietnamese monk sets himself on fire
This man was Buddhist and set himself on fire in protest. He did this to show that if you weren't Christian you were better off dead in South Vietnam -
The United States withdraws support of Ngo Dingh Diem, Leader of South Vietnam.
The United States gave support to Ngo Dingh Diem until he started to kill everyone that disagreed with him. After this he was assassinated. -
President Kennedy is assassinated
JFK was assassinated November 22nd, 1963. This left Lyndon B. Johnson for the presidency. Johnson pushed further into Vietnam while JFK wanted to leave and let them fight alone. -
President Johnson claims a U.S. ship had been fired upon by the North Vietnamese.
President Johnson claims that the USS Maddox was shot at by Vietnamese. The response was the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution which gave Johnson almost full control of starting a war. -
The first combat troops arrive in Vietnam
The United States sent their first military advisers in September 1950. It took 15 years to send our first troops over to Vietnam after our advisers.
