  • Dien Bien Phu

    a decisive engagement in the first indo-china war.once the french settled in the Dien Bien Phu Valley, viet minh commander Vo Nguyen Giap amassed troops and placed heavy artillery in caves of the mountains overlooking the French camp. Giap mounted assaults on the opposition’s strong points, eliminating use of the French airfield. Viet Minh forces overran the base, prompting the French government to seek an end to the fighting with the signing of the Geneva Accords of 1954.
  • Geneva Accords

    the Geneva accords refers to the agreements made pertaining to the furture of Vietnam. under the Geneva Accords Vietnam was split at the 17th parallel for two years, until they elected a new president. the Accords was meant to solve several problems, including the war between the French and the Vietnamese. the US, Soviet Union, republic of china, France, and Great Britain came together to try and resolve the problems in Asia.

  • Gulf Of Tonkin

    U.S. Navy Destroyers were fired upon of the coast of Vietnam. the two destroyers reported being fired on and to avoid confrontation they moved further out to sea. it was said that they seemed to be fighting ghost but still President Johnson believed it happened and later signed the Gulf of tonkin resolution into law. the resolution gave Johnson the authority to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attacks against the United States and to prevent further aggression from North Vietnam

    The Tonkin Resolution was passed in response to the Gulf of Tonkin Resolution. it gave President Johnson the Authority to take all necessary measures to repel any armed attacks against the United States and to prevent further aggression by the government of the North Vietnamese.
  • Tet Offensive

    The Tet offensive was a series of attacks by the Vietcong on South Vietnam. The offensive was an attempt to stir up a rebellion in South Vietnam and encourage the U.S. to scale back its involvement in the Vietnam War.
  • my lai massacre

    American soldiers brutally killed most of the people in the villiage of My Lai. it was one of the most horrific incidents of violence committed agaiinst unarmed civilians. more than 500 people were killed. the U.S covered up the massacre for a year before it was reported in the american press. the brutality of the massacre fueled the anti-war sentiments and divided the United States.

    President Nixon authorized the Invasion in response to North Vietnam invading the country.The invasion was meant to disrupt North Vietnamese supply lines.
  • Vietnamization

    Vietnamization was a policy of the Richard Nixon Administration to end U.S. involvement in the war. under the policy they expanded,equipped,and trained south vietnamese forces and assigned to them an increasing combat role. while doing this the U.S slowly decreased the number of U.S troops.
  • Pentagon Papers

    the Pentagon Papers was a name given to a top secret Department of Defense study of U.S. political and military involvement in the Vietnam war. Daniel Elsberg- who had worked on the study- opposed the war and decided that the information in the papers should be available to the American Public and he leaked the papers to the New York Times

    he was an American writer and analyst that leaked the pentagon papers . he helped strengthen the public opposition on the war.
  • Christmas Bombing

    b-52 bombers came to Hanoi in December of 1972. the Christmas bombing was issued by Nixon to get the Vietnamese to sign a treaty they rejected. after 11 days of raids the North Vietnamese returned to Paris to sign the treaty they rejected.

    the war powers act was designed to limit the president's ability to initiate or escalate military actions. also the president had to notify congress when he deployed U.S armed forces overseas, which limits the time they can be there without congress's approval . the act was meant to prevent another lengthy war like the vietnam war.

    the paris peace conference lasted 5 long years before the paris peace accords were signed. the accords was a peace treaty signed by the U.S, South and North Vietnam. it established peace and ended the war in vietnam.

    the South Vietnamese and the U.S. was losing some of its force so The U.S took its self out of the war and the south Vietnamese surrendered to the North. Saigon was taken without much of a fight.
