    French surrender at Dien Bien Phu
    The Vietnamese forces occupy the French at Dien Bien Phu. The French commander ordered troops to cease fire. This battle lasted 55 days. 3,000 French troops were killed and 8,000 were wounded. The French surrender.

    This is when the Golf of Tonkin incident occured. This was also known as the USS Maddox incident. This was a sea battle, a jet fighters bombs shots at torpedo boats. One US air craft was damaged, 3 North Vietnamese boats were damaged. 4 North Vietnamese killed and 6 were wounded.

    Two days before the United States presidential election the Viet cong attacked the Bien Hoa air base that was near Saigon and four Americans got killed, 76 were wounded. Some of the bombers were destoryed and some got damaged.

    President Johnson authorizes the Operation of Rolling thunder. This was a bombing that was limited but it lasted a long time. Its purpose was to aim its force at North Vietnam so that they stop supporting the guerrillas in the south.

    The My Lai Massacre happened on this day. This is when US army soldiers of something called the " Charlie" company of the first battalion. Most of their victims were women, babies, young children and elderly people. The victims were also raped, beaten and tortured. This took place in a village.

    The shootings at Kent State were also known as the May 4 massacre. This was at Kent State University which was a school in Ohio. There was a shooting that happened killing four college students. The killers were members of the Ohio National Gaurd. The students that got shot were doing protesting against the invasion of Cambodia.
