French were defeated at the battle of Dien Bien Phu. The battle lasted 170 days between the French and the Vietnam.

Geneva Accords

Geneva Accords makes a cease-fire between the French and Vietnam. French leaves Vietnam and a boundary was setup between North and South Vietnam at the 17th parallel.

Operation Chopper

Operation Chopper is America's first combat mission against the Vietcong near Saigon.

Gulf of Tonkin

Aug 2, 1964

North Vietnam attacks two US destroyers that were in the Gulf of Tonkin. The destoyers were "Maddox" and the "C.Turner Joy".

Operation Rolling Thunder

Feb 7, 1965

Vietcong launched an attack on a military house where American advisors were located, killing 8 Americans. Johnson ordered an air-strike the next day against North Vietnam called Operation Rolling Thunder that lasted 3 years.

Tet Offensive

Jan 31, 1968

North Vietnam joins forces with the Viet Cong and led the Tet Offensive on a hundred South Vietnam cities. It began on the Vietnemese New Year. The goal was to get control centers in Vietnam.

Mai Lai

Mar 16, 1968

U.S. soliders killed hundreds of Vietnamese civilians in town of Mai Lai in a massacre. The civilians were unarmed. The massacre was ordered by Lt. Calley.

Kent State Unversity

May 4, 1970

Collage students were protesting at Kent State Unversity. The Ohio National Guard fired into the crowd and killed four people and wounding nine others. They fired 67 rounds into the crowd.

Fall of Saigon

Apr 30, 1975

Saigonis the capital of South Vietnam and was captured by the North. This led to the reunion of Nnorth and South as one communist country.
