  • Solid Waste Research Program Established

    The Solid Waste Research Program is part of the Office of Risk management and was funded in 1990. It offers up to $30,000 per award to fund projects that research alternative solid waste disposal.
  • WE CONSERVE Founded

    WE CONSERVE Founded
    In 2006, the We Conserve Initiative was founded by program director Faramarz Vakili. The initiative involves students, faculty, and researches on campus with the initial goal of reducing campus energy emissions by 2010. By 2010, it surpassed that goal. The We Conserve Initiative has been one of the leaders in the push for increased sustainability at UW-Madison.
  • We Conserve Launches Composting Project

    We Conserve Launches Composting Project
    In 2009 We Conserve Launched the first food composting program at UW-Madison. It's goal was to eventually compost 400 tons of food waste each year. The program began with two locations- one at the Memorial Union kitchens and one Grainger Hall's Capital Cafe.

    New Gordon Commons Built (phase 1)

  • Compost Drop Off Sites Pilot Program

    The first compost drop off site was launched at lot 62 in 2011. It provides a place for commuters and offices to dispose of compostable materials in a sustainable way. After the success of the pilot program, another drop off site was added at Lot 76.
  • Office of Sustainability Launched

    Office of Sustainability Launched
    The Office of Sustainability was outlined in the 2010 Task Force Report, and launched in 2012. Its purpose was to connect all sustainability efforts on campus.

    Establishment of the Greenhouse
    The GreenHouse was a Residential Learning Community that focused on environmental sustainability. The GreenHouse was started in 2012 in Cole Hall, and has since moved to Leopold Hall.

  • Leopold Hall Opens

    Leopold Hall Opens
    Leopold Hall opened in August 2013, and was designed to encourage residents to live in sustainable ways. The building includes a greenhouse on the fourth floor and roof-top solar panels.
